Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Yet another Lift Pump question

I know that this has probably been covered in previous posts, but time does not allow me to perform a search and investigate.



My truck was at the dealer yesterday and I had them take a fuel pressure reading that determined that it was low. The dealer is requesting a new lift pump but it will not be in until next week. We were planning a trip to North Carolina this weekend ( aprox 1200 miles ). My feeling is not to take the truck until the pump has been changed. I would do the job myself but do not have the facilities at present.



Any views would be greatly appreciated!!!!

How low and under what conditions . Why not a fuel and boost gauge set up ? How did you find out you needed to have psi checked by dealer? was this a wot or at idle normal 2200 rpm ? You could get one from Cummins and in stall it in the drive way etc but that will cost you some if not under warranty that the way to go. Dealer cost about x2 . Are you having low power , hard start . Have you changed the fuel filter on time or drained it lately . Do get a gauge set up soon and know what is going on with the system all the time. If you are willing to pay for the pump, go to Cummins and get it there, much cheaper. ... .



The pump is very easy to do but sorta hard to get to, there is 3 bolts on top and 2 hoses. I replaced mine and then I bought a pusher pump and put it back by the tank. To see mine, Do a search " MY FUEL SYSTEM SETUP FINALY DONE" It shows the plumbing and layout I did.

I don't know if your pump is really low but if at like freeway speeds, it has like 5-10 psi, it is sufficient for the trip, just dont push it hard... .

I had my truck in for a recall on the hood latch and just thought that I would have them check the fuel pressure because of the notorious weak lift pumps these trucks have.



They said that if the home office approved, they would install a new lift pump under the engine warranty. I have to call them tonight to see if it was approved.



If not, I fully intend to purchase a new one and install it my self asap.



I'll ask them tonight what the fuel pressure was. They told me yesterday but as usuall,,,, I forgot.



As soon as money allows ( laid off recently ), I'll definitely invest in a fuul set of gauges.
