Just bought my first Cummins, now the wife wants one too #ad
Made it past the first oil change ok. Have read about different issues with these trucks, lift pumps, brakes, ball joints, gear clashing. What can I expect to go wrong based on others experience? Thanks and keep up the good posting.

Heck of a woman you got there.

I have had only two problems. Replace the Air Bag Module and install the Crankcase Vent Bottle (which does not do diddily). Lately, most have been talking about steering wander.

So when is the wife picking hers up?

We're watching the economy at the moment. If it settles down we're off to the dealer. She wants a 2500 SLT 2WD Cummins 5 speed. Steering wander, mine is REAL sensitive to road crown angle. Whats is the problem? Sloppy steering boxes or sloppy tie rods? My steering is nice and tight but it only has 4500mi. Should I expect problems with the lift pump?

Hey neighbor! Glad to see someone from fairly nearby on the board. I know what you mean about the wife wanting one (check sig). There's just something sooo much more fun about driving one of these things than driving anything else.

Wife's truck:
95 2500 SLT Laramie 3. 54 automatic JVC cd out of factory infinity system, southwest grill gaurd (a favorite amongst the deer population), K&N chunked, AFC adjusted, "gutless" cat, Geno's dual EGT/boost gauge, TST #6 plate slid all the way forward, AFC housing slid all the way forward, silencer ring removed

My truck:
95 2500 SLT Laramie 4x4 automatic, Geno's dual EGT/Boost gauge, Dodge cat test pipe (I'm still testing hehe), Geno's muffler eliminator pipe, AFC star wheel adjusted for smoke show, TST #6 plate slid all the way forward, AFC Housing slid all the way forward... let the fun begin!

TD, You should have the new version lift pump on your truck already. It should not be a problem. On the steering, mine wandered... . any correction one way caused an immdediate need to correct in the other direction thus creating the "serpentine" pattern traveling down the road. If wander is a problem, your dealer should replace the gearbox with no hassle. Mine did and it solved the problem. I don't think you will have any bigger problems with the new Ram than any other you might have bought. Sometimes aggrevations occur but they are not as often as you might think. Mine is an 01 with over 30K miles and I really like it. Sometimes when I find things, I post about them, not as a complaint but as something others may want to look for. This weekend I checked the torque on my exhaust manifold bolts. Two were 1/2 turn and two were 1/4 turn out. Now they are all the same. That's not a complaint. At 30K miles, it was time to check and I'm glad I did.

Thanks Alan, I feel better already! I have noticed the tendency to steer and then counter steer, just thought it was a by-product of the super tight turning radius. I'll ask the dealer about it. Thanks for the heads up, I really love my truck too.

Uhhhhh... yeah... . that's it. The turning radius enhancement. Good luck. If they replace the box, get a good allignment shop and you will be good to go. For some reason, when they changed mine, the steering wheel was about 45* off. BTW, there was no unusual tire wear, just funky steering.
