Hi Everyone:

Just introducing myself, been lurking here for some time and finally joined. Look forward to participating.

As an aside, Santa told me that the bombing can commenceOo.

Sooo..... gauges first. I am looking for a good mounting option for 1st gen, A pillar or dash. I have the factory tach, mounted in dash bullet pod just to the right of the inst. panel hump (center). Looking to install EGT, Boost, and Trans Temp. Suggestions?

Probably at same time will change from 18. 5cm housing to 16 (from what I can gather, good choice for towing).

Again, look forward to talking with you all and thanks for all the help:)

Welcome

Hi Pat,

Welcome aboard. From your signature, our trucks appear to be very similar. Right down to the GN hitch:) I have Autometer gauges and a 2 pod A pilliar pod. I put my boost and pyro on the A pillar and mounted the transmission temp gauge down by the ash tray. I put it on with an Isspro 1 hole bracket. My tach is a 2" Isspro mounted in its own cup. I mounted it over by the A pillar. Before you add the transmission temp gauge, give Bill K. a call and ask him for a transmission pan from a 2nd gen truck. They are real cheap and will add about a quart to your fluid capacity. Much cheaper than a MagHytech. I don't have any gauge pictures. It took me a Saturday to install everyting. Hope this helps you out a bit.

Thanks Jeremy. Yeah, Unagoose makes a nice unit.

Which Autometer gauges did you put in? I kind of like the idea of the A pillar mount, but wonder about visibility. You have any regrets? Hadn't thought about mounting ttemp down by ashtray, have to look into that. I can't seem to find a source for a 3 pod A pillar mount for the 1st gens, so am wondering if a 2 pod plus a single would look OK.

Thanks for the heads up on the transmission pan, I will call asap. Waiting for some warmer temps to get under truck and do a service on transmission (bands, filter, line pressure). Was 6 F this am, with about 12" of new snow. Do the 2nd gen pans come plumbed for a sensor?

Thanks!

Pat

Gauges

Pat,

I have the Autometer Z series gauges. They are not the brightest at night, but are easy to read. I got them mainly because they look like the truck's stock gauges. I even have the green background lightling. I looked for a 3 hole A pillar mount, but never was able to find one. I have not had any problems with a blind spot because of the gauges. I decided to mount the transmission temp gauge down by the ash tray because it was out of the way, but still visible. It is just to the right of the ash tray and to the front of the transfer case shifter. The 1 hole mount cost me less than $2. Plus there is less distance to run and hide wires. The 2nd gen transmission pan doesn't have a drain plug or a bung for a gauge. I just cut a hole in the pan and had a friend braze in a bung. To drain the pan in the future, I will just remove the sending unit and drain most of the fluid out before removing the pan. BTW, what do you tow with your truck?

Jeremy:

We own a couple hay burners, so mostly pulling a 2 horse tag. Just had a 20' gn flatbed beaver tail built locally, use it to haul hay, firewood, and equipment. 2 7000# torqflex axles, 14. 5 F rated goodyears, 102" wide. Trailer framing good for over 14K, tires about 13. 2K. More weight than I need to pull.

Spoke with Bill and Crystal. Nice people, shipping a pair of pans to me, all I have to cover is shipping! Getting 2 in case I bugger the first one...

Anyone have a preferred location for the probe? I think I recall seeing a post from Bushwakr on the topic, now that I am a member will have to give the search feature a workout:)

Probe Location

Hi Pat,

I mounted the probe in the pan. The basic idea being (thanks to BushWakr) that you want to know the temperature of the fluid going into the clutch packs, not the temperature of the "used", hot oil. I have also picked up that the TC operates at a higher temperature than the rest of the transmission. I put the probe on the rear side of the pan. I wanted to keep from snagging it on something as much as possible.

Hey Jeremy:

While you were replying I found the conversation that you are talking about. This place is great! Now to get the gauges, I've been looking and I'm leaning toward the Isspro EV line. Anyone have a lead on a good source?

Pat:

Another gauge option. I got an Isspro (2 gauge) 2" under dash mount and 2" boost and transmission temp. gauges. I took the ash tray out and the mount fit right in there. Dont know if your ash trey is the same. My Tach was already mounted top left dash so I mounted the Pyro. next to it. All pretty easy done. Put a cig. lighter under dash right of ash tray location for cell phone charger.

Unavailable(out of town) for ten days.

Hi Guys,

I took the recommendation from Bill Ks site to mount the sender in the cross over line. I have the rear oil cooler so it was easy to use a brass tee and some barbed fittings to install the sender.

As I understand it you want to know what the temps are at the hottest point in the transmission. Theory being the oil in the pan is mixed with cooled oil so you never know what the extream temps may be. If the oil in the TC is overheating and breaking down you may not know it by the temp in the pan until its too late.

I mounted my gauges in individual pods right smack on top of the dash centered over the steering wheel. It took me three days to get up the nerve to drill a perfectly good dash. I love it there. Soooo easy to see with a quick glance. I now wish the speedo, oil pressure, batt & fuel gages were mounted up there too. In the spring I'm going to have a custom dash matt made to go over the gauges.

jbolt is right on with this info. Your transmission fluid is starting to break down around 260* and you want to see if your temps are close to this and gear down or back off. Your pan will never show you anything close to that unless you have big problems. I ran it in the pan just to see what kind of temps was in there and it never ran over 150* unless pulling real hard.

:) Welcome, Pat. Just a couple notes, there is a huge restriction in the ehaust above the drive axle which can be popped out. Also the POD injectors are a go HP increase for the money! More air for the motor and sounds likme your on your way. Once again, welcome, good bunch here! Tim

Wow! What a great site!

Bob: Like the idea of the ash tray. Have to check the clearances.

Jay/Mark: Just what I wanted to know. Thanks!

Tim: Unfortunately, several years ago (before finding this place) I had a ss exhaust fab'd and installed. Bent (not mandrel). Know exactly what you are talking about. Been thinking about dumping out the side ahead of the rear wheel to do away with this. After that 16cm turbo, injectors, then transmission.

DPK: Thanks for the pointer to Summit. Probably won't do the deep pan route until new transmission.

Thanks again guys:D
