2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission caster issue?

I finally have my York A/c compressor mounted and pumping air. For those of you not familiar, the York was used for A/c for a number of years on a number of vehicles, but off-roaders have been converting them for on board air compressors. These things can really pump out some air. Unfortunately, no one makes brackets to adapt them to our trucks, so I made my own. Hopefully I can get some pictures loaded up. Thanks to the guys on here who have 'been there, done that' and have helped out!

Oo.

Hey the pic works! The belt guard looks kinda sorry, I know... I was in a hurry putting that together with a borrowed welder... The cool thing is that everything fits- its tight, but it fits. If anyone wants any more pics let me know.

By the way, this thing can fill tires really fast, runs an impact at idle, and with the engine speed at 1600ish rpm will hold 70 psi with a blower nozzle held wide open!!

Doh!!! Well I HAVE pictures of the bracket somewhere around here... I'm transferring all my pics(its only a few gigs worth  ) to the new computer and have lost a few. Brad Kilby's (www.onboardair.com) bracket for the 24 valvers used a tensioner to tighten the belt. I couldnt find enough room for the tensioner to fit so I made a bracket that would simultaneously pivot the york and alternater at the same time. This tensions the belt fairly tight, maximizes the space available for the york and alternator, and still allows the radiator overflow reservoir to fit. Now if only I could find that pic... :(

I do however have a pic of a ghetto fabbed bracket from the first attempt at mounting. :D :-laf This is similar to what I used except for the two flanges on the left were replaced with a single bar that had a curved groove cut in it for adjustments. I'll try to get more pics of the bracket tomorrow.

Do you have a tank?, I'm installing a kilby bracket kit right now and am considering where and how to mount the tank. Did you use a Kilby alternator pulley or make something else?

Jared

edit you posted pic while I was typing, I see now its a Kilby pulley.

no tank as of yet... I have a 9gal air pig I can connect into the system temporarily when I need it. I dont have an air horn so the need for a permanent tank isnt there... and the york by itself at idle will push enough air to run an impact intermitently. The alt. pulley is from Kilby. He offers two models, I have to larger one. I doubt the smaller one would fit well on my 12V. I'd like to machine a pulley with a larger v-pulley, this would make the york run faster at idle. But thats probably getting into the 80/20 stuff...

oh, I just remembered- my brother has two 5 gallon tanks mounted under the bed, outside the frame rails on his 96 extended cab. They came from Tractor Supply for 15/ea, he built brackets.

Willys,

What year is your truck. Looks to be about a 95 to 98 12v. If you have a later model or and earler one, Onboard air makes a kit for mounting these compressors. If it's the 95 to 98 12v we are out of luck. He doesn't make the brackets due to the fact that no one will let him have a truck to use for 2 days to fabricate the mounts.

With all the TDR members in CA - someone ought to be able to help out...

My truck is a 96. I plan on building a bracket for my brother's 96 in a week or two. I'll try to get more pics of my bracket or his at that time.

I imagine the demand for the 12 valvers is fairly high... anyone have any guesses as to how many folks on here might want them? 2 or three dozen maybe? more?

I'll try to get a parts list up too... a lot of the parts are available from www.onboardair.com but a few might have to come from grainger depending no your setup. Mounting the manifold and gizmos might be hard for you guys running hydroboost or FWAL brakes... mine are rear only and I have a good little spot on my drivers side fender.

Sorry for taking so long to get these pics posted up, I hope this will help someone. The first picture is my york bracket, it's been modified since this-the long grooved bracket has been shortened and its been painted-with a better paint. I have pictures of it modified but they turned out a little blurry. The second picture is my brother's york bracket. Slightly more refined looking(except for the booger welds :-laf ). His is 1/4 plate, mine is 3/16".

Apologies for digging up an old thread. There aren't a lot of people who have done this successfully that post.

I have a friend that successfully mounted a York compressor the way you did. Before he mounted the compressor he blocked the oil return with a set screw to prevent it from pumping the crankcase oil into the tank. Once he got it installed he has noticed the oil level dropping hen he uses it.

How do you keep the oil in the compressor and out of the air system?
