This is for real guys and gals,

Yesterday I did the KDP jig process and this went fine. However, I also changed my thermostat and anti freeze. I used the process outlined under The Shade Tree on page 76 of issue 35 of the TDR.

What was interesting is what I found inside the thermostat housing when I pulled it off. Having the housing in my hand I turned it over to pull out the old thermostat. It rattled. Not just a small rattle but one that said "let me out of here before I kick down the door. "

When I pulled the thermostat out, sitting loose inside the housing was a piece of slag. I beleive this had to be from the casting process when the housing was cast. This piece of slag measures 1-11/16" long, 1-3/8" wide and 5/16" thick and weighs a hair under 1 oz. This is cast iron like the housing and is shaped like a tongue that someone has cut off. One corner has a tip on it where it appears to have been attached to the main part of the casting inside.

When I got the piece out, it did take a little effort, I was able to see a couple of spot where the piece of slag had been sitting at various times and had started to wear slights depressions into the inside of the housing. There appears to be no permanate damage and the piece was shaped odd enough so it had not passed from the housing into the upper radiator hose or radiator. From there I finished replacing items and the job was done.

Starnge. :--)

And now I'm on the road again. What's next?

Best, John

With my luck, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if I had all sorts of little gremlins living inside my engine. As long as they play nice with my B5. 9 and my Holset, I'm all set.....

I believe you,really do

"I up graded mine when I had to pull it. (piece of slag or casting had it jammed open). "

From a post I made 1-13- 02. Engine was running way cool. Amazing to spit that up after 7 years and 165k miles. Glad I'm not the only one.

My worst was to find a 1"x 1/4" diameter hardened steel pin stuck to the transmission magnetic drain plug on my 2 year old JD tractor. Never did anything about it and so far nothings happened in eight years.

I found a paper thin piece of slag blocking off about 1/2 of the intake port on #2cyl when porting the head.

With all these imperfections... . it makes you wonder how good they'd run without 'em. AND it makes you happy knowing that you own a stout piece of iron that can withstand this stuff.

Matt

Well I hope you put it back in that piece of slag is Part # w09o756432zz and is very hard to find to replace, especially one of that size. I hope you kept it. :D :D :D :D
