Isn't a Koala actually a type of bear?

No. It's a marsupial.

Why does it matter? The instructions say to choose an animal, without mentioning kingdom, phylum, class, order, or anything else.

The whole exercise is pretty contrived. First, the letter we end up with at the beginning is always 'D'. Most English speakers (in North America or Europe, at least) will probably pick Denmark. There aren't a whole lot of animals that start with K (koala and kangaroo will probably be the most common). For A, the fruit will almost always be Apple; for O, Orange.

The two most likely results are:

Denmark, Kangaroo, Orange

Denmark, Koala, Apple

EDIT: should've re-read the whole thread again, since this reasoning has already been mentioned at least once.

It matters because I didn't know. They're always called Koala bears, mistakenly apparently.

But it doesn't matter for the purposes of the exercise. We're supposed to pick an "animal". It doesn't matter if it's a bear, a koala, or some kind of frog - as long as it starts with the last letter of the chosen country.

I didn't ask because of the purpose of the exercise. I asked because I wanted to know. I wasn't questioning anyone's response. That's my point. Your point is clear and understandable, but irrelevant to my question.

Scooter, not to sound condescending but when I first read your question I said "what does it matter?" to myself. I thought that you had also asked because maybe you thought that a bear wasn't an animal. Just the way the question was worded I guess.

Please tell me that you just made that up. Because if not I have to know how in the world can you come up with that? I didn't know green beans were a fruit! :-laf
