Question on disabled wastegate

I saw this post while I was lurking over at the Duracrack site. Don't bother reading all the posts, just the the first and last one. The dealer wants $6200. 00 to change out bad injectors (suspected contamination) and will not file warranty!!! I believe I would rather buy a pallet of lift pumps at $150. 00 Ea.

If the link does not work you can cut and paste.

I'm with you on the pallet of lift-pumps, damn for $6200 I could have my head ported, o-ringed, a cam, big injegtors, e-brake, turbo, etc, etc, etc. Man, I love my Cummins' Ram! :D

Later, Rob

JEEZE = hard to believe something like that could happen to "the most perfect truck in the Universe" - AHHhh = and THEN to get "serviced" by Mr Goodstench" in the process!:D :D :D

And just think - the poor guy still has aluminum head meltdown to look forward to!:D :D

It's under the bumper to bumper warranty......

Really there is nothing wrong with his truck that couldn't go wrong with any fuel injected diesel. Picked up some dirt or contamination, algae, water, what ever... . They should warranty no matter what the contaminate is, dirt or moisture related ... . It's there filter system, he did timely filter changes, they have water separators, and they do not allow fuel additives, if there present they will deny a warranty claim, so fix it all ready ..... Sux he has to deal with incompetence ..... Pricey fix? Oh ya ... ..... The DC 03'S will have a similar system so get ready... ... .

Hey Gary don't worry about them heads, no melts yet, moving into third year production, only changes are primarily emission BS, it's old news ... ... Many miles of real world testing... ... . How's that new truck?

MAC :D

yup, the new HP common rail system uses a very similar set of injectors, lines and pump. now if it is $6200 usd for 8, the cummins will only be $4650 usd :-laf. 2 less cylinders so 25% cheaper. bad thing though, when you convert those $#'s into canadian funds, you basically move the decimal over to the right one place. then it looks about right:rolleyes: canadian $$$ is worth nothing. . :(

The new Common-rail MAY be more powerful, and quieter, but my '99 just keeps lookin' better all the time.

It's kinda like my '76 H-D.

People ask all the time "Isn't that an AMF year bike? Didn't they have alot of problems with them?"

My answer "If I haven't found and solved all the problems in the last 26 years... . I guess I'll just have to live with them. "... :D :-laf

If the manual says no fuel additives and an owner adds fuel additives, I guess he's thumbing his nose at the people who hold the warranty card. Turnabout's fair play. I'm for people taking responsibility for their own actions. Don't bend the rules and screw up a $10,000 engine and then blame the manufacturer. That seems alittle too liberal minded to me.

Maybe using a fuel additive that disburses water in the fuel instead of letting it seperate and get trapped in the water seperator is not a good thing for the injection pump and injectors regardless of which type of injection system it is. Might cause alittle corrosion in the fuel injection system.

It also puzzles me whenever I see a $30-45k truck at the el-cheapo fuel station when the good stuff is only 5-10 cents more a gallon right down the street.

I put 42,000 miles on a '79 FLH. I didn't have any trouble with it but I was aware of the potential for trouble with the AMF years. Then a '88 Heritage, '88 XLH883, and I've had my '92 FatBoy for 10 years. I haven't had any trouble with any of them yet I continue to hear from the Honda crowd how Harley's are nothing but trouble. I guess it depends on the owner.

Not at all aware of the finer points of GM's warnings in their DM user manual - and whether or not they DO officially specify against fuel additives - but I faintly remember some years back that SOME fuel additives intended. among other things, to "clean fuel injectors", were shown to be pretty aggressive in attacking some metals in fuel systems, especially if allowed to sit unconsumed for longer periods of time or mixed in stronger concentrations than specified...

AND, since I understand a PART of the DM fuel distribution is THRU galleries inside the heads, wonder if the "aluminum" bit has found a round-about way to bite DM owners in the a$$... ?

HI Macklin - the new truck is doing GREAT! Now if I can find some way to keep them dern Duramaxes from clogging up my nice shiny new grill-work... Worse than flies and bumblebees out on the roads... :p ;) :D

How's that Juice doin' for ya? I just got the Dodge equivelent - the Edge Comp for mine - wanna stay as FAR ahead of the competition as possible... :D :D

Looked at a new DM 4WD 4-door at a dealer's lot while having graphics installed on my new truck next door - REAL nice looking truck - dark blue metalic, fully loaded - but the $43 grand price tag nearly gave me a heart attack!

Steve. . The cheapo fuel and the 10 Cent more a gallon fuel came out of the same hose at the distribution point. Some companies add things at the dist point at the time the fuel is loaded for the specific vendor, but the fuel is the same.

JC, does that also apply to gasoline?

I've run E-Cheapo brand gas in the past and seemed to get less mpg from the non-name brand stuff.

cheepo gas may be cut with methanol. while it burns cleaner, it requires more of it for the same power. methanol has less btu potential

JC, I've heard that before. Even if it does, it doesn't wind up in the same water logged algea infested sandy bottom tank underground. The restrooms aren't all the same either even though it all goes to the same sewage plant. I'll spend the extra even if all it does is help me sleep better. :D

Buy fuel where they sell the most so it is fresh and not full of crap.

I'd rather buy from a hole-in-the-wall truckstop with filthy restrooms and greasy food than from the uptown yuppie fancy gas station that sells 5 gallons of diesel a week.

I used to own my own gas station, it was un branded and I bought fuel from whichever broker gave me the best price. The tanker driver told me they all fill up at the same fuel wholesaler, there would a lot of name brand tankers in the same line as him. This was in Oregon some years ago and it was not a big city area.

i see the same local tankers at the Citgos and Texacos in the area.

they all come out of the same citgo depot here in town.

BTW, i get my fuel at the local Citgo 'cuz it's cheap (til our diesel tax goes up 8 cents here soon) and many of the local businesses here use the station for their fuel so there is a good turn over.
