I just put new gauges in yesterday and it's been super cold outside (0 degrees). My questions is should my trans temp gauge move or is it normal that it's not (because it's this bitter cold outside)?
My guage won't hardley even move in the winter even when it's around 30 degrees unless i'm in stop and go traffic. But if i put my winter front on and the temps are around 20 and if i'm in stop and go traffic i can get it to move. My guage is in the trans outlet line to the cooler.
Mines in the hot line goiing to the cooler , and it only goes above 100*f. , in warm weather at a stop , for at least 2-3 min.
Then if yours is mounted els were it could be even less active .
Not unusual for the gauge to set on the left peg in the winter. This is normal when you are winter driving without a load. Let you rig idle in park for 20 minutes and you will see it move.
Turns out the guy who installed the Trans gauge only hooked up the LED power not the gauge power. It works great now that I fixed it! Thanks for the help!

Very hard on your transmission and damaging to let your truck idle or run in park. No fluid is moving to lubricate parts and damage will occure if do long enough and enough times. If you need to let your truck idle, do it in neutral with the emergency brake on.
pwr2tow, I don't know if i agree with that. My transmission stays warm and even gets warmer when idling in neutral. However, when I put it in park and idle, it instantly starts to cool down. Somehow, heat is being drawn away from the transmission while it's in park and thats a good thing.
I noticed on my truck that the trans temp goes up when in park for more then a few minutes. The temp never gets hot but will lift off the 100 degree peg. The temp will go down when driving easy. On cold days the temp usually stays below the 100 degree mark when driving easy down the road. In the summer with a load I see temps from 120 to 160. I wonder If placement of temp sending unit is a factor on what appears to be contrary temp indications. My sending unit is low on the driverside of the trans pan. The oversize pan adds about two quarts of capacity to the OEM system.
It would be nice to know the placement of the sending unit for you who find that your temp drops in park as compared to neutral or while driving easy.
