Had my 2002 2500 at the dealers last week and they want to replace the lift pump with the 2005 in tank pump. The service manager told me the new pump would, under load, go to zero psi on my fuel pressure gauge, but not to worry.



Ahhh I'm worried, anyone else have experience with the in tank replacement?



They tell me since it's a high flow pump, pressure is not an issue... but how much flow can you have at zero psi? Am I missing something here???? :eek:
 
Or go to Cummins and get the original type lift pump. I would not go with the intank type regardless of what the service manager says. The thing people seem to not think about is the fact that you haven't changed the fuel line size and restrictions therefore 15 psi equates to more flow than 0 psi. It's simple physics for simple people like me, if it can't hold the pressure up then it must not have enough flow! :(
 
For what it's worth I just replaced my LP last week. I picked it up from Cummins and stayed stock for now. I'm going to purchase the Vulcan relo kit and get rid of the banjo fittings and put the LP closer to the tank. I've heard from a couple of people that this is sometimes enough to fix the problem.
 
By reading the article by Glacier Diesel would installing a Vulcan big line kit increase pressure to the VP?? :confused:
 
My experience was moving the lift pump and bigger lines will increase the pressure and keep the drop to a minimum.

I don't think so, given the way it is setup. All the foamy fuel won't help matters any.

Wow, I really appreciate all the replys, especilly the link to the Glacer article. I have decided to go with the carter replacement for now to avoid any warrentee hassels when the vp44 craps out, which I expect soon, as I am having misses now and then and a "I'll go when I darn well :eek: feel like it" responce to the throttle, but no codes yet.
 
Contacted Richard at Glacier Diesel via email and he said to find a stock sending unit and canister (like the one DC took out for intank) and get the 392 kit. Anyone know where I can get one???
 
kimr, I added the Vucan/OEM LP relocation along with the in-tank pump. The in-tank now feeds the Carter and everything flows through the larger fuel lines. I'm seeing 26psi at idle and can't get the pressure below 22psi WOT.

The Carter has been giving me problems on cold mornings (flucuating pressures) and I may have a bad pump (what's new!) but that's another issue. When this is working properly (95% of the time) it's really putting out the pressure... maybe a little too much.

Anyway, it's something to consider if you already have the in-tank pump installed.

My stock LP went out recently at 85,000 miles. Had a replacement put in (not the in-tank). I think it was under $200. I installed a fuel pressure guage and I have good pressure now plus I can monitor the pump. I don't really see the need to do a lot of reworking of the fuel system and spend a lot of money on other setups. If I can get another 85,000 miles I'll be happy. My truck is stock however.

So if you are running the 2 pumps together how did you connect them (harness them) together to have them run at the same time?
 
I wired the in-tank pumps so it starts up as soon as the key is turned to the "run" position. I added a toggle switch so I could turn it off anytime I wanted (like trouble-shooting an electrical system that needs the key on).

So... while I'm waiting for the "wait-to-start" light. . the system is primed with 5psi fuel. When you start the engine... the carter kicks in.

On the carter pump Vulcan supplies a jumper cable that plugs right into the OEM LP connector.
