I have a '92 4x4 dodge with an auto transmission, the transmission is in need of being rebuilt. Has anybody ever swapped a ZF 5speed into a 1st gen dodge. A buddy of mine bolted a cummins to a ZF in a ford, so I imagine a ZF can be put into a dodge. I have a '94 F250 4x4 with a 460 and a ZF in it that I can steal from, that is why I am asking, that truck is just begging to be parted out:-laf Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.

ZF 5 speed swap

Im shure bolting to the transmission will work out the biggest hurdle will be

is the T-case will it fit your 205 t-case then you got drive line issues as well as the clutch issues , Id use destrokes kit , it be easier to put the cummins into the ford

I'm sure it can be done. I have a zf5 behind my Cummins in a Ford. One thing I would like to point out though is that the zf5's behind gassers are wide ratio trans while the ones used behind diesels are close ratio trans. You probably won't like the transmission from the gasser as the gearing will be wrong for your Cummins.

As I stated before I'm running a zf5 behind my Cummins and here in the not to distant future I am going to swap in a differant as yet to be determined manual trans as I don't think the zf will survive to long behind the Cummins.

Hey Ty,

The zf gas transmission ratios are almost the same as the NV4500. I'd go with the destroked transmission adapter and about every adapter is going to cost the same.

I agree with the transfer case being the major issue. On the ford the front driveline comes down the drivers side, on the 1st gen dodges it comes down the passenger side. Can I clock the ford transfer case around so that the front driveline comes down the passenger side? Then fab up some linkage.

There is no way you could clock that t case that far if you did it be up side down and that would never work out

well I think that for now I will just get the auto transmission rebuilt. I am also working on a Jeep Kaiser M715, and I think next year I will put the whole drivetrain out of this truck into the Kaiser.

I forgot those 1st gens had the driveline on the wrong side. But I do think advance adapters makes one to connect the two, but that's another expensive adapter to buy again.
