some info to think about

zoom stated that thier truck was 793. 7 ft# and 277. 4 hp nice numbers but a new 05 dodge CTD with only a 70 hp chip will lay down at least 390 hp and around 725 ft# and the stock clutch will hold that and some if driven correctly. Not to degrade Zoom's product but it needs to be proven on dyno and on the track (sled and race ) I own a SBC DD but did look into zooms clutch but SBC at the time had already proven their clutch in my 01 dodge so I opted to go with what I knew. Good luck with the clutch production both sides.

that is zooms tow rig . not the most power through the clutch. I will give it a run on the dyno to see. zooms clutch, my truck, TST dyno soon.

What did you pay for this clutch? I was quoted by I think the same guy at zoom to be $900-ish. Parts available though napa. Napa was going to charge me $1500 for this part.

That doesn't sound right Jason. I'd check with Gary again. Also, check out Summit Racing. They are also a distributor. Seems like I saw them there in the $650-$850 range? Gary can't really quote prices since he can't sell them. You have to buy from a retailer like Napa or Summit, etc. .

thats right I would check summit or advanced auto stores, carry them as well. I think the summit web site listed them around 850, not sure if that was with flywheel or not. I have the perfection flywheel for mine. like I said Mark C. is going to get it on the dyno to see it as well. I am going to see if it can be at the time as turbotech, I don't know thats an idea I had. I have an htt 66/14 coming this week so it will be on the truck before testing. I wanted a low pedal pressure no noise clutch that will hold the power, not sledpull. not even sure if 3 gear launch is an option. I have been told its not great on the fe either. parts are as I suspected quality made,. having used zoom product in the past in a nova and dads goat I knew they would be. the flywheel is a new perfection flywheel they outsourced not a usa product, but the cranks in our cummins are not either. the starter ring is a billet piece not welded forging. when I get mine out I am going to a buddys shop and rockwell the surface and see if it has changed from any of the slipage. if it has the flywheel option is a plus, as even surfacing it will not cure it. as for pedal effort under load Gary says they only see 7 pounds more at 2800 rpm at the pedal. the g56 guys no time frame for you :( .

Several good questions were asked about the new ZVT, first all clutches are sized and configured to transmit torque, horsepower adds the element of rotation, and torque plus rotation equals work being done, horsepower. We have a torque calculation formula on our website www.zoomclutch.com in “calculation”. This is the same basic formula that the industry has used and can be found in the SAE Manual Transmission Clutch Systems handbook. Our disc is a commercial truck disc with 8 cryogenically treated double damper springs. The ZVT lever cartridge contact is positioned directly over the top of the casting to apply the increase in clampload. If anyone would like to call our office we welcome your inquiry at 800-258-8312 press 4 for tech support, 8-5 EST.

Not to be a PITA, but, I think this is what Peter was refering to when he said, works on paper, but not in real life...

279rwhp? That's what a stock 3rd gen will do. Maybe not as much TQ, but come on guys. Who cruises the highway at 3,000RPM? My truck makes over 1,000Lbs of tq (rear wheel) at 2,000RPM. The OFE I have is holding perfect, and it has no extra parts to make it work, just good ole' R&D...

that is the limits of your clutch correct? where the zvt starts there and just goes up. call haisley and see if they don't have similar set-up on their dd competition clutch, one that adds leverage with rpm. I say wait and see the numbers. Mark told me he would donated the dyno time to see himself. like I said minus twins I am giving this an all out assault to see if it works, whats it costing any of you? so if its no better than the fe, whats that still cheaper. I must add I do not work for them at all ,I work for DC in the auto trans plant(KTP). nor will I lie about a product that I don't think will cut it.

You're right. I'll wait to say anything unitll I see results.

Except, for the one thing I like about my FE is the ability to shift WOT. It might be childish of me, but it sure feels good...

Sorry, about my previous post. I meant to say FE, not OFE. Although I have had both, I have the FE currently, and the Dual disk should be going in this week.

The FE has had a price drop to $800+Shipping (47#s). The FE for the NV5600 and G56 has a new pressure plate design (not modification) to have a clamping force between 3300 and 3400#.

As far as HP and TQ #'s for this new design, I would only imagine that they are up. SBC has not updated these numbers. I'm sure this is becuase lake of dyno and real world use since this was a short month ago since this new version was released.

The only issue I would suspect with either clutch is current HP limits of the 3rd gens with 13" clutchs isn't near 650+ hp for the majority of the folks out there doing any real world work, or even real world racing (the guys that do have autos?) just yet with the 3rd gen.

Peter, any TQ and HP numbers that in theory could be had with this new version?

Zoom Zvt

I recently had the opportunity to travel to South Carolina and visit with Gary Croyle and the folks at Perfection Clutch. It was great experience spending time with Gary and trying to take in a small amount of his vast knowledge of his 26 years experience in the clutch business. I had the chance to tour the building and see more clutches of various types and sizes in one spot that you would think possible. The clutch lab with all the test equipment was pretty impressive.

I also had the chance to have one of their ZVT stage 2 clutches installed from the ZOOM performance clutch line in my truck. After putting 177,000 miles on my stock clutch, it was on its last mile. The ZVT is a very impressive and unique clutch, using centrifugal force to increase the clamping load as the engine rpm increases. Gary is the man to contact for more specific information on this product.

The whole experience was wonderful and the hospitality was second to none. How many companies can you go into and meet the president and vice president, let alone have them take time out of their schedules to talk to you and make you feel at home.

I know a lot of people in the TDR are partial to the other brand of clutch. I would just like to say if you are considering purchasing a clutch, do take a second look at the ZOOM. From my own personal experience, I feel it would be worth you time to contact Gary and the other fine folks at Perfection Cutch with all your questions.

There are also a couple of other people that helped make this trip possible. Thanks again Andyman and Piston Slapper.

After having it in for a week now, I can say that I have no complaints. It is performing just as I was told it would. Pedal effort is better than stock and comparable to my wife’s Honda. There is some noise under a load in 4th gear. All other gears are quiet, nothing to really complain about. I’m still getting used to the button disc and the aggressiveness associated with it, although it is getting better as the miles add up and I get used to having it. A small amount of chatter is noticed in a 1st gear take-off from a dead stop, and a little more noticeable in 2nd gear. No noticeable difference in driving manners at highway speeds over a stock clutch. Once again, it is getting better as I adjust to having a high performance clutch. All of the small issues listed above were explained to me when making the decision of choosing a stage 1 or stage 2 by Gary. He asked me if I wanted drivability or torque capacity. I chose torque for future upgrades. Overall, I’m satisfied with the ZVT, but the rear tires may have a different opinion.

We put a diablo Power Puck (~65hp) on his truck for purposes to testing a little added power. Anthony went with the stage 2 clutch and is planning on adding some mods. I'll let him speak to that though.

With the Dual wheels on in a straight line from a dead stop with a boosted launch. . Yes. Without the duals, no.

Without boost, the truck falls on it's face, and, uhm, no  :p

The OFE could handle a 3rd gear launch though...

I'm going to be testing the Dual disc soon, and I hope it can shift very quickly (up and down) like the single discs could... I like'd to hold my foot to the floor while shifting... Seems to be a bad habit of mine :-laf

I am interested in the Variable load clutch. Seems interesting. I'll keep my eyes (and head) open. .

I have a SBC Street DD and it can be shifted very quickly. No complaints there. It grabs hard enough in every gear to get a chirp.

I asked Merrick , because Peter told me the fe will hold torque if its already engaged. which I suspected because the ceramic material does not seem to take boost launches well in high load gears. engaged it holds great, I suspect the same from the zoom, time will tell.

That pretty much sums up my FE. from idle, to 3,500RPM in 6th gear on teh street it wold the power, but if you power shiuft, and short shift it at the saame time, you have to let off the power for a split second to get it to re-engage.

Although, I have slipped it for a very long time when frustrated with it once, and it still lived, no problems.
