My friend is a Ford guy, as I was. I really cannot bad mouth the 7. 3 Powerstroke too much - I liked mine and dumped it only becuase of the wimpy transmission and lame turning radius. But he wants a F-350 dually crew cab, and it's unlikely he'll go old enough to get a 7. 3. He's entertaining new or an 05 to 07 6. 0. With teen age kids, I can't argue with the rear seat room compared to a Dodge. I know the 6. 0 has a bad rep here on TDR, but didn't some of the bugs get worked out after the initial 2003. 5 introduction? I would think due to much higher cost and zero track record, the 6. 4 is a much bigger gamble than a late 6. 0. I guess I'm looking for some real stats on what's wrong with them. Any web sites or other sources that I could steer him to to provide full disclosure of the risk?

Thanks!

I love my dodge, but am a firm believer of buy the best out there at the time of purchase (almost bought an 06 lbz... . it was close)... that being said, the 6. 0 is a turd... have him review the diesel stop 6. 0 forum... . if that doesn't scare him, he's fearless!

6. 0 = guranteed turd, 6. 4 = maybe turd... .

Both the ford and dodge's have new motor's and dodge has a new transmission, and they all have new emissions junk on them..... tell him to get an 06 5. 9 with great incentives and laught all the way to the bank... . bottom line, is he a first model year kind of guy or not?

Just tell him about the lawsuit between Ford and IH. Even Ford is ****** about the crappy engine they have... . although redesigning the same motor in a sense won't fix the problem either.

I'd definitely tell him to drive an '07 6. 7 with the new 6 spd auto before he makes any decision to buy a Ford. My guess is that it'll change his mind. Plus----look at the '08 SuperDutys------talk about buttugly.

Thanks all. The dieselstop link and a couple of news stories on the IH/Ford dispute should help. As for the Dodge, I think that's a losing battle with my buddy - unwilling to accept a short dually in a Megacab and QC too small ... same old story. My hope is to get him into an early 2003 7. 3 Powerstroke; lesser of the evils!

A friend of mine has a 6. 0. His wife refuses to ride with him if he is going any further than her walking distance back to the house:-laf . He now has 18k miles on the truck, a new short block and a new steering box amongst other things. The wife say's she has better things to do than sit on the side of the road.

Now thats funny:-laf

Now i dont want to get flamed, but have him look for an 06 GMC if he wants a larger cab and a better motor than the ford... . it's not a dodge, but if the dodge is rulled out, i'd be pointing him to the LBZ/Allison as the next best option.

I'd agree. . Nice as a stock configuration. I do not know how well they hold up to modifications. But I have driven in a LBZ towing a 30' enclosed and the motor and transmission work well. It drives like a car not a truck...

Not that you need anymore but...
My brother has an early 6. 0 and has had MANY problems. After the first flash fix it wouldn't get out of his steep driveway before it warmed up. Second flash fixed "that" problem. This last year they had to replace the turbo. No power! The variable turbo quit doing the variable! Nothing but trouble. He was thinking about the new Ford but the impending trouble with that makes it a non option. Someone here posted a link to the "Flat Rate" discussion board. About a 40% early failure rate (might be 30% but that's still WAY to high!).

I'm an ex-ford guy too. After the 7. 3 there hasn't been a ford to go to IMHO.

We've had two former Ferd Super Duty Dudes convert to Dodge CTDs here at the ranger station. ;) One will be picking up his 07 from Dave Smith ASAP. He could have gotten a better deal at Yellowstone Country Motors in Livingston, but some folks just won't listen.

The only thing that got much better from 03 was the Dealers weasel perfomance. My 05 excursion was a nightmare. Started with the bellhouseing drip and like an idiot I couldn't live with a leak in a 50k truck so I start the process of bringing it in. I should have left well enough alone cause the dealer made it worse and worse. Luckily for me that damn thing caught fire and burnt to the ground in the middle of Mississippi. Was really inconvienent as I was in the middle of a long distance move but in the long run I think that was a favor in disguse. Oo. One thing I will say is they tow damn good with that torque command thing. I liked it but they can keep the problems.

Not to mention the new front-ends of the ford are fugly. I keep telling my ford fan buddy if they would paint the truck green and install that wood panel sticker down the side, they'd have Griswold's Station wagon from National Lampoon Vacation.

Here is some intresting news.

Navistar halts diesel engine shipments to Ford

The new Super Duty pickup, the most profitable vehicle that financially strapped Ford Motor Co. will sell this year, is in danger of stalling midlaunch.

Navistar International Corp. said today it has stopped shipping the 2008 Super Duty’s popular 6. 4-liter Power Stroke diesel engine in a contract dispute.

“The bottom line is we have to be paid,” Navistar spokesman Roy Wiley said. He added ... story Published: 4:14 PM, ET, 2/26/07 / Last changed: 2/26/2007 4:15 P. M. [REG]

I keep hearing this `'All new 6. 4'. It is a bore and stroke on the 6. 0, not an all new engine. In addition, it has even more emissions equipment than the 6. 0. A little reading on the Ford website will reveal how endearing the emissions equipment of the 6. 0 has been to the average Ford owner.

A personal observation: My winter home is on highway 441 in Okeechobee, Florida. This highway is about 25 feet behind my mobile home. Standing behine said mobile home reveals that about 4 in 10 diesel Fords have one or more defective fuel injectors, or is missing for some other reason. And they aren't all beat up junkers. Many are very recent vintage, some brand new. For whatever reason, there are very few Chevy diesels down here. Most here have out-of-state plates. About one in 20 of these have the same problem as the Fords. In owning and observing the Dodge diesels since I bought my first in 1989, I have NEVER heard one running rough.

I have noticed comments on other websites about Dodges ratings being worse (less) than it's competitors. Many don't realize that each manufacturer sets their ratings according to their test performance tests on their product only, and personal preferences relative to durability while towing and load hauling . Except for legal concerns about specific load ratings, there is little direct comparision between the manufacturers. As an example, Chevy used to rate a 4 banger Chevy Citation to tow 2,000 lbs. After a little digging, you would discover that only applied to a 2 or 3% grade and 25 mph in 1st gear and something like 8 square feet frontal area. That is smaller than any pop-up camper I was amiliar with. Possibly you could have towed a power pole or two, but it sure couldn't have stuck out anywhere inti free air behind the car. How many people do you think EVER travelled like that?

So diesel will burn without compressing it? If I'd known a Powerstroke could burn to the ground like a gasser, an impromptu "fuel leak" could have saved me (and the subsequent owner) some agony in finding a new home for the F-350! :)
