Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Cummins Quits after pulling a Hill

This has happen twice on me. Today I was going up a hill pulling a trailer with a smaller John Deere Tractor and the Temp was rising slowly but didn't peg at all. The hill is about 3/4 of a mile long. Anyway when I got to the top I let up on the throttle and the motor just died. It started right up and I kept going. The other time it happen I was going up a longer hill pulling a dump trailer with top soil and the truck did get hotter but didn't peg and I came to a light it just died again and it started right up again and the truck ran fine. When it did die it didn't stumble at all and if it wasn't that the steering got hard I didn't realize it did quit. Anybody have any ideas? Also is it normal for the temp to rise when not really pushing the truck? Also there was no codes set. The only gauge I have is Fuel.

The truck runs fine otherwise.

I had a similar problem with my '97 12 valve. The local Cummins dealer couldn't repeat the problem and pronounced it fine after $250.

I pulled the fuel tank myself and found the problem - a broken clamp on the fuel suction line.

Ran fine after I fixed it. Good luck with yours!

When you say it died do you mean quit running all together and you had to pull over and start it up again, or it cut out then started running again right away. Mine would cut out then start running again, like a stumble, sometimes a bunch of times in a row, especially when towing and on hills. It would then go away for a month or so and return, noticed it would come back with climate changes temperature changes. Ended out being a bad IAT sensor I had installed. Thought back of when the problem started and it was when I put a new one in so I could clean the old for and extra and just swap them. Took about 10 months to figure this out cause it would come and go so often. Never had the problem since 2 years, now.

It quit all together and needed to be restarted. Ran good after that.

How much fuel was in the tank? Have you tried it with a full tank.

I had close to a full tank. It seems to pull alright just after a hill where it had to pull rather hard when I let up on the throttle it died. Not sure if it is heat related or what. Sure would like to find the problem.

I hate to say it but your VP44 may be bad. Try pouring water on it. If it starts then start shopping for one. Thanks

He doesn't have a problem starting it. Just keeping it running. Are you sure this is a valid test of the problem?
