Guys, doing a odd conversion, a NV5600 behind a 4BT. . I bought the NV5600 semi cheap with low miles with a cracked bellhousing and broken flywheel housing. So I had the bellhousing replaced and got another flywheel housing, I was told "this is for a NV5600" but am unsure of the differences and that there is a specific NV5600 flywheel housing? (versus the NV4500 flywheel housings?) Are the flywheel housings different between manual and auto NV5600s as well? The flywheel and starter are the correct ones that matched the motor, an '04 Dodge high output... for what its worth...

Question 2... Attached are some photos, when I went to bolt the starter up, I am unsure if I got the right flywheel housing as the starter doesn't bolt up correctly. . So... I have been reading I guess there is a starter spacer out there. . Is there only one starter spacer that is made or do I need a specific spacer with a specific part number. . I have been hearing they are cheap and plentiful because a lot of guys pull them to use with South Bend clutches? But I have had no luck finding one, the Cummins part number I have they want $60 for it? I was hoping for $5 :-laf

The flywheel housing you have is for a nv4500/47re. You need one for a nv5600/48re. There is a spacer that is sold to allow this flywheel to be run with a 4500 to use the upgrade clutch. If you buy the 13" clutch, it comes with a spacer for the starter. I am not sure if the setup will work, but I would give it a try. Just make sure your input splines and pilot bearing fit as they should.

Haaaa Not my shtuff

Haaa I have done too much walking this winter. If it were my stuff I would spend the money and do it right. you are looking at the perfect chance for some half crap setup to bite you in the poopy hole when you least expect it. I personally considered a NV5600 conversion to get away from the junk 48RE. right now I am sticking with the 48re for another year or two. if you want to do waht your doin right you need to ge tthe proper parts for the job. not having the starter align up properly will only give you more problems when you least want them. You obviously have the money now otherwise you wouldn't have spent all you spent. later when something happens you might not have the money to get a tow, hotel if your out of town, storage fee at the towing lot for the trailer you were hauling when it broke, and to replace the flywheel and starter all since you cheated yourself when you set it up. If this were my own personal stuff I would reconsider since this seems about as dumb as putting JB weld on the starter teeth to try to repair the problem. Trust me I have seen it.

Anyway:rolleyes:

I tried to get the matching flywheel housing but again, it was cracked. . I went to a shop that is an authorized Cummins dealer and he picked through and sold me a flywheel housing that he said was specifically for a NV5600 versus some of the other Dodge flywheel housings he had. . Everything is bolting up correctly, the pilot, flywheel, etc, are all correct. . The starter gear also works with my temporary little nut spacer that I was using to move the engine a little but...

I was told yesterday (hence the question) that there are two NV5600 flywheel housings, a standard and a automatic, one that is spaced and another that isn't, but that Cummins sells a spacer that works and they are on some of your Gen III trucks from the factory...

Anyway, RE money, funny that guys think I am "rich" because I'm putting a NV5600 in an old Land Cruiser... I don't have, never have, and probably never will have a car payment so I am choosing to put my $$ into building the truck that I am looking for. . I am still probably less than 1/3 what most guys here are into their trucks I estimate if you are buying your truck new, if it matters... Irony is the NV5600 alone cost more than the most expensive car I have ever owned. . :-laf

I found a photo of this starter spacer. . For some reason I was under the assumption that it is a common part that is commonly removed when installing the performance clutches, etc...

In the link posted above, it says "2001 and up trucks with the 13" clutch come standard from the factory with this spacer. "

I didn't realize this was a factory item until now. I just assumed it was for retrofitting the 13 inch clutch. I just went out and looked as there are 3 six speed trucks in the parking lot right now. The 01 and the early 03 have the spacer, but the 04 does not.
Go figure.
