Has anyone modified thier rearend to make it posy tract or even limited slip.

My truck is terrible in 2wd drive and only one tire will spin when stuck in wet grass. I would like to modify it with locker's or something else other than changing the entire rear end. Any sugestions?

From a dead stop, on wet grass (or mud or snow) put your emergency brake around 1/2 way on. this will cause some load on the spider gears (more load then required to spin one wheel) and the rear will spin both tires. I have driven many a car out of a snow bank after someone else got it stuck with this trick.

TowPro is correct about the emergency brake. I never knew that trick until I read my owners manual... . it tells you to do this.

I had the stock LSD in my '03 2-wheel drive and it did halfway decent in the snow. With about 75 lbs in the bed it slogged through a foot of snow pretty well with stock Michelin tires. One thing I noticed was it locked up better in reverse, so when I'd try to drive through the 2 feet of snow plowed up between me and the street, I'd start off in reverse to make a set of ruts, then charge forward through the snow pile. If I didn't make it I'd back up and try again & again until I got free, or stuck!

I think your about to slide down that slippery slope of "just in case". I got limited slip, just in case. I ordered 4wd just in case the limited slip was not enough. I added the 12K winch just in case the 4wd was not enough. I keep a shovel in the back just in case the winch needs help. I am sure I will think of something else that I will need, just in case. My suggestion is to just say no to "just in case". :)

Just in case, I keep mine inside the garage when it snows, then do all my work from home :). Mine does alright in the snow, I was carrying around around 700 lbs of 12" block all the way in the back. my problem is I have a 20% grade to get up to the street. the grade is smooth concrete, with mold on it, in the woods, on the north side of the hill.

I can appreciate the extra weight. Not only does it give you better traction, but I think it rides better with some weight in the back. That is one of the reasons I added the an 80 gal aux tank. When the tank is full I figure I have about 700 lbs in the back. I also like the extra range of starting a trip with over 100 gal on board,... . just in case the next fueling station is closed.

Yep, I agree - 3. 73 + no limited slip = no usable traction when drag racing.

Using the emergency brake to get traction even with the AA LSD is not right.

Why couldn't they leave well enough alone and keep the Dana like I had in my '99 - good bite with both rear tires on any surface. No playing with brakes, etc.

I was pretty disappointed with my 2wd until I got rid of my LTX A/S and got a set of Toyo M-55's. No problem's anymore. Not too much snow in Northern Nevada, but when we were home on vacation in Montana (including West Yellowstone where they don't plow the roads on purpose so snowmobiles can run on them) it did just fine. It would probably be easier in an automatic though.

TowPro - My '99 dana worked about as well as a LSD can. Like I said - both tires turned when it needed it. Even with AMSOIL lube & no added modifier. And - with 300000+ miles on it to boot!

I have read numerous posts about the AA LSD that talked about having to play with the emergency brake to get both sides to pull. I have no personal experience with one. If yours works - Great!!

My limited slip is a joke also. I prefered my old Dana 70 to this new american axle getup. The dealership keeps telling me it works fine even though it doesn't. I've even tried the e-brake trick with no joy.
