I'm going to be checking the KDP on my 99 24v next weekend. My truck is a really late build (late June, 1999), so I'm guessing I probably have the updated cover. But, will it be apparent when I get it off if I have the updated one? I don't want to put on the tab and have a clearance issue if I do have the updated one. Does anyone have pictures of either the regular one or the updated one, so I can compare?

Thanks.

My 99 didn't have the updated cover. I just drilled a hole using the KDP jig & threaded a bolt in..... no need to pull the cover.

How did you know you didn't have the updated cover without pulling it? Is there a way to tell before I open it up?

I never really understood what the KDP problem everyone talks about... .

On the older trucks before late 99... . it was a timing pin used to time the injection pump or set valves. You would turn the engine to tdc & the pin would lock in to the cam gear.

Uuummm, nope. The KDP stands fro Killer Dowel Pin. The KDP is the dowel pin Cummins used in the front of the engine block to precisely locate the timing gear case. Either the dowel pin was too small or the hole in the block too big and the dowel pin can vibrate out, often causing significant damage. Sometime in the early 24v engines Cummins went to a stepped bore in the gear case and eliminated the possibility of the pin vibrating out but no one knows when it was put into production.

The easiest way to eliminate the possibility of the pin coming out is to use the KDP jig. Another way is to use the tab method. Either will work.

I do own a KDP jig that is currently in Washington state. If anyone wants to borrow it PM.

Godspeed,

Trent
