I haven't had this problem with my CTD but did have it with my 79 Rabbit Diesel. The fuel shut off solenoid failed three times, once closed so it wouldn't start and I had it towed to the dealer and they replaced it under warrenty. The second time it failed open so it wouldn' shut down, also replaced by the dealer under warrenty. The last time it failed it was closed so I removed the solenoid, took the poppet out and screwed the solenoid back into the pump and just put the transmission in 5th and killed the engine until I could get a new solenoid. It was pretty calm to kill a Rabbit diesel, I hope I don't have to do it with the CTD because I did accidently kill it once and it was pretty violent.

The fuel solenoid attaches to a lever. Try pulling the lever down. If that doesn't work check to see if the starter is sticking.

Here's a copy of my last reply from that other thread... .

The run position is with the solenoid rod being pulled up. Down shuts the engine down.

What kind of shape is the rubber boot on the solenoid in? If it is ripped, there could be dirt and or corrrosion getting in there and gumming things up. Or, maybe the spring is broke.

When my engine is running, the plunger is in the down position. Isn't the down position "supposed" to cut the fuel supply ????

I did move the plunger to the UP position when the engine was off and the key in the ON position though. It did hold in that position.

The boot is torn up and a large chunk of it is missing. I think I'll remove the solenoid and inspect it visually.

The solenoid's lever does drop down, but the engine still continues to run (for a short while... ).

The starter doesn't appear to be sticking on.

What would keep the engine running if the solenoid lever is in the DOWN position ???
