63,000 miles (2003 see signature) and a block away from work my lift pump bites the dust, leaving me to get it started after the 5th try and to only limp to work in 1st gear because it would barely idle. So the dealership calls after I pay to have it towed, $200 later(thought I had towing on insurance?) to tell me the were going to have to keep it until tomorrow. For what you ask? For a new lift pump that will be re-located to the tank. As for symptoms I noticed over the weekend that my pump was noisy and buzzing on occasion. accompanied by a liitle more black smoke than usual. I don't know how this happened since I use Stanadyne Performance formula in every tank. I think maybe this ultra low sulfur diesel is starting to rear its ugly head. From what I read on here I think its time to get some more gauges i. e. fuel presure, rail pressure and a low pressure l. e. d. Kind of a funny story as I was pondering the idea of goin with a GDP-392. Oh well! Does anybody know if they make a kit that will work with the in tank set up?

Greg,

Thanks for describing the symptoms before the failure! I'm at 90K and will probably go to one of the external lift pump/filter combos. Right now, I am just carrying the external pump 'fitting' so I can remove the stock lift pump and run without one, if I have to. Packaged the 'fitting' with a 5 mm allen and a 17mm box end so I should be ready to by-pass a failed lift pump.

I am not enthusiastic over the in tank lift pump, I want something I can reach easilly.

Agreed... right there on the frame rail = easy access/service

Its still under waranty which is the only reason I'm going the in-tank route. Otherwise I would have the GDP installed. You guys know how it is, these things just seem to happen at the wrong time.

If your truck fails under warrantee, I would expect Dodge to pay to have it towed to the repair shop!

I recently installed the BD Diesel Aux. Lift Pump. At idle I am at 20-22psi and WOT it falls to 12-14psi then levels out. So for around $275 for the kit and another $50 for the LED indicator for low fuel pressure. Nice set up.

Well guys I got my truck back this evening and all seems well. I noticed I have a new relay and 15 amp. fuse on the firewall now. Does anybody know what these are for? And what if I want a GDP-392 kit, which one would I order since I have the retro pump installed. As a side note I think my lift pump may have been on its way out for a while because my trucks starts easier and runs a bit stronger. Hope this helps others that may have to go down this road.

Greg

Just wanted to let you guys know that the truck its doing great and even picked up some mpg's since my lift pump was replaced was at 16 hand calculated and last night I filled up and its getting 18. Needless to say I'm thrilled that a truck this big is doing so well. Back to my question about the GDP-392, what kit would I order now? Does anybody know?

Greg

Just call Richard at the number listed at GDP site. He answers his phone most any time of day. His kits have their own power supply(new relay and batt hook-up) and new fuel pick-up in tank. so it shouldn't matter where your existing lift pump is located.

I think you will need the later year types now. You need to drop the tank to install the new pick-up. Also, you might want to wait a few miles to see if your injection pump fails soon. A friend of mine had his updated after the lift pump failed, then the injection pump went south. The dealers probablly won't like the after market pump and will say that was the cause.

Get a fuel pressure gauge.

When starting yours did it seem like it stumbled to a start instead of starting like a Cummins should? Mine has 90K on it and it has some starting issues sometimes. Not long cranks, it just doesn't start right. It's almost like the older 24V after a fuel filter change. The other thing I noticed is the lift pump always runs for 25-30 seconds. I know it didn't used to do this because it would buzz for a few seconds and then you could hear the grids ticking while waiting for the lWTS light. I need to get mine in again and see if I can get a new lift pump before 100K and see if I can't fix my sticky idle problem in the process.

I don't think ulsd has much to do with the failed lift pump. I replaced mine with a GDP (by the way Rich is awesome) and I am amazed that the little plastic "piece of crap stocker" works as well as it does. I still have mine hanging on my wall of shame, still works, at least it did when I took it off.
