So, how well does the factory CD player hold up?

I want to upgrade our tape deck to a CD player for road trips and haven't decided whether I want to go aftermarket or get a factory unit from a salvage yard. I like the big buttons on the factory units and the fact that it will fill the dash cutout nicely. But, if they quit after 80k, then it's not worth looking for a used unit.

Any thoughts or experience? What years of the CD players are interchangable?

I upgraded my tape player (OEM) with a junkyard CD plus tape, OEM. I got the unit off EBay, and am very satisfied with the results. I wanted one that would fit and look original. It is easy to control, looks great too. I know of no maintenance issues with them.

I have both the cassett and CD player. My cassett player doesn't work right but the cd player is fine. I have 92k on my truck. My 95 had a cassett player in it and it went bad twice. Jeff

I had the CD/cassett OEM in my '97 and it had a CD player failure at about 20K miles. Replaced under warrentee and worked fine until I sold it at 140K miles.

I ordered the upgraded sterio in my 98. It's still running fine after 117K miles.

The CD skips on rare occasion since I started running full pressure in the tires.

It also works fine with my home burnt CD's. ( an issue some other members had problems with)

The casette has been fine too, but I dont use it much.

My 97 tape deck still works fine, but I`d like to upgrade also. Would a newer year fit a second gen. or do I need one from a second gen. ??

I bought a CD/Cassette unit off of eBay, too. No functioning problems. My only complaint is that it will skip if you run over a few gravels. Sure would be nice if it was like the new one in my wifes car. We've hit some pretty good bumps in her's and I don't think I've ever heard it skip. I guess they've come a long way in CD player technology in 10 years, huh?

Lots and Lots of vehicles used that model CD/Casette payer. Most of the EBay sellers can tell you exactly what it takes to buy a plug and play unit. I think it took me less than 5 minutes total to pull the old one and plug in the CD unit. Mine has an equalizer on it as well, I am quite impressed wth the sound. Some Dodge trucks used a different type radio system, if you have that you need a different system, I did find that while searching for mine.

187K+ on a 97 1/2T with a AM/FM/CD Infinity system. After a coupe of hours continious play, it has minor skipping problems with playing owner burnt CDs on rough roads. Other than that, no problems. Still sounds better than my 05 CTD AM/FM/CD/CASS Infinity stereo system.

I have the OEM CD/AM/FM and it has not worked right for about 6 years. The buttons sometimes don't work until you press them a dozen times, and sometimes when you press one function, you get another function.

Some day I will replace it with a after market unit,

In '01 I swapped an Infinity Radio/Tape/CD unit from a 2000 Dakota into mine which had the Tape/Radio Infinity. The first one ate CD's, the second one did once but it was an easy fix.

My truck originally came with the tape deck, but the owner before me put the CD player in. Not sure what year it is, but its got about 8 years on it and it plays fine.

I have a problem in my wiring somewhere though and only the right speaker works. #@$%! I'm just too lazy (lack of amibtion? would rather hear the CTD sounds?) to fix it. :-laf

My 01 has 195K on it and just about 4 months ago the CD player gets "picky" about which cds it will play. One time it wouldn't play a brand new CD out of the rapper. Every now and then it skips too and makes noises when playing a CD...

my trucks stock cd player went out at a measly 11000 miles. not very impressed. like the new setup i have much better it just came at a time when money was low.

still have mine after 160k, Works fine. don't listen to it much. I have the EQ and the CD+Cassette. I want to get an MP3 player and will probably unload my stocker on ebay. ,
