I've had the Beta software for a couple of weeks now. I had to put the beta on software #1. Everthing else was way too agressive for my stock everything. #3 made my stock clutch slip and made my stock turbo hit 43psi (yikes). The throttle is way too sensitive. If I was racing people all the time it would be ok. But with the thing set to the lowest level (#1) it is barely ok for drivability. The power is incredible, but as agressive as it is, I can't see how this could be a "Towing" version. Not for me, anyway.
Here are some mileage results for my '07 5. 9 2500, 4x4, quad cab long bed with 8000 miles, and an MB-G56 manual transmission. Mostly dry weather in the 70's, 5000-6000ft of altitude. I ran tests through three different tanks of fuel. There was no towing. 75% highway, 25% city. Same route, back and forth to work. Driving like a grandma. Never went over 65. Usually managed to keep the RPM below 2000, but didn't lug it. Only did a couple of power checks merging onto the highway with each tank of fuel.
Tank 1: Ver 4. 06D (the one on the web site with the April 17 date) Had software #3 with stock torque management loaded. Results: 19. 8calc. 22. 3 indicated. Hard to keep from smoking like an old coal fired steam locomotive. Had to keep very light foot on throttle. Worse than grandma. Power is good, but nothing like the beta version tested next.
Tank 2: Beta "Economy and Towing" Software on #1 (#3 was going to break something) 19. 0 calcualted , 25. 3 indicated. A little better smoke control, but not much better. Power is incredible, but only used it once or twice. I Didn't tow, so I don't know if the EGT is effected.
Tank 3: Back to stock: 18. 5 calculated, 19. 5 indicated. No fun at all. Not much smoke, but surprisingly, if I am agressive on the throttle, and have the engine at say 1500rpm and floor it in 5th going 45 (6 speed), even the stock truck can smoke a bit.
My conclusion:
With only three data points it is hard to guess, but so far the mileage improvements are minimal at best. It surprised me that the normal version actually got better mileage than the beta "economy and towing" version. The power sure is nice. However, I could do without the smoke. My test probably isn't typical because of the altitude, but it is real. No B. S.
In my opinion, Marco and Bob Wagner still have some work to do to put the shine on the Smarty, at least for my use. I gave them my money and have the Smarty. Now, I am patiently waiting, but am still light footing it withthe beta 4. 4 on #1.
