Some Not to Consider

Dad's '87 9130 smokes a lot when the throttle is pushed up. Almost no way of increasing RPM w/o smoking. It would be cool if it were a race truck but this thing smokes like a '70's Mack. I can add chips, gauges, intakes, and whatever simple stuff to the newer trucks but I know next to nothing about the older mechanical engines. What can I do if anything to lessen the smoke a little.

Air filter is new, turbo is good, injectors are good, exhaust manifold was fixed/replaced a couple years ago so there is no more leak there. It just smokes a lot.

I can't remember what the tractor dyno'd. Factory rating is 195hp and I don't think it's much over that.
 
Make sure there is nothing abstucting the air flow. You put on a new filter but does it have a smaller internal final filter that the big outside slides over? I have seen that on trucks and tractors and they can plug . Have you tried it with the air filters off? Just throttle it up with the air filter off to see if it does that. If the air filters check out and it still does it with them off then it is over fueling. Im not sure which pump is on there but the fuel adjustment could have moved. Generally if they do, it over fuels but the power goes up too . Just some ideas here . I had a 1066 do that. It over fueled . Blowin smoke but the power was uncontrolable. I had to get a rebuilt IP.
 
Does it have an I/C? It could be leaking. I would say if it has a p-punp, turn the starwheel back, I know some ag and construction stuff doesn't have an AFC though.
 
take the cover off the back of the pump via screws or small bolts and turn the set screw clockwise. Adjust it until it clears up.
 
Just to clarify. I didn't use the word "accelerate" because I didn't think it really applied to the situation. The trator only smokes black and only when it's accelerating, not at idle and not at field operating RPM's.

No I/C so no leaks there.

No excess of power, no lack either.

Thanks for the replies. The tractor only gets used in the spring and fall so it might be a while before I get around to playing with it.
 
something set too soft on the aneroid on the pump maybe? the pump is allowed to fuel up too quick and the turbo isn't able to keep up. under load in the field, the turbo should be spooled up. at idle, no load so no boost and very little fuel. .

i understand mechanical fuel systems, but i don't work on p-pumps. . all the stuff i work on is MUI and MUP with electro hydraulic governors

Is that as simple as it sounds or should I let someone with more experience try that? Will that lessen the hp or just the smoke?
 
The AFC affects the RATE of fuelling, not full load fuelling. At least in theory.



You say the injectors are good. I assume they were tested on a stand? If not, you could have one or all popping low or atomizing poorly, and not be affected by the Nut-cracker method (crack the injector nut one at a time and listen for one that makes the engine stumble/ miss less- has to get bad for this to work). Just checking.

If it only rolls smoke when hitting the throttle, then clears up, I'd leave it alone. It is normal. All of the 8. 3s do that. You ought to see a Hydramaxx 2400 tile machine w/ 8. 3 when you hit the throttle at low boost, and push quick on the hydro lever. :-laf:-laf The hydro really pulls on it, and rolls the coal. Oo. Oo.

We had a Deere 9100 4wd w/ 8. 1L, and it smoked til the boost came up.

Main thing is, the power to weight ratio really sucks. A small displacement engine on such a heavy machine isn't the best combo in my book. However, if you have an under fueled large displacement engine, it isn't any better. No guts at all.
