and gassers are so much more responsive! If I want to make a left hand turn forget it until the light is yellow cause by the time the turbo gets spooled your gonna be broadsided.

-- Your truck has issues then..... with a stock turbo and smarty lag does not exist

Yeah, what turbo lag? :D With a Smarty, you have to WORK to make it lag.

Another useless and stupid thread..... if you don't want your diesel truck anymore then by all means get rid of it, but why do we need to hear your sorry excuses?? I don't give a rats azz it you keep it or trade it off for a gasser, it's your life do as you please, but don't cry to us about it. Grab some balls and do what you must, be a man, and stop winning so much!

Diesels are not for everbody

"For those who buy a diesel and expect it to be a car---your right!!"

This is right on, I am sorry but I get better gas mileage then my friends with the Hemi powered 1500's.

Then go hook that gasser to a load a go try to pull it???? ;)

Maybe you just needed a 1/2 P/U all along and didn't know it. :D

Speaking of half-tons and towing, I was on my way back to Indy from Evansville a month back. I'm driving up 37 thru Bloomington when I come upon a Chevy 1500 pulling a trailer with some minor stuff on it, not over 1000 lbs as far as I could tell. The trailer weighed more than the load. That area of 37 doesn't have much grade to it. That truck was constantly shifting gears to keep up. I could've pulled weight of the truck and trailer on a bigger trailer with my 3/4 ton in 6th gear at the speeds we were running (60ish) without a problem and probably got as good fuel mileage as the Chevy unloaded. My old 99 with a 318 coulda done better than the Chevy.

No one is whining - a guy is simply questioning the need he has - and possibly others as well - to invest in a diesel powered vehicle for their particular use. It's been an interesting discussion, with many diverse opinions and examples - and precious LITTLE need for personal attack or ridicule...

You often contribute excellent info and insights in these threads- but in this case, you might wanna sorta chill out with the unnecessarily abusive attitude - there's usually plenty of room here to discuss viewpoints, even those WE might disagree with... ;)

I am glad I live in the good old USA.

If we lived in the USSR we would be driving an old Mercedes diesel and would have only corn syrup to burn. #@$%!

Indeed - widely varying options and viewpoints are something to appreciate and enjoy, not vilify and attack... ;):D

Will my next truck be a Hemi or Vortec? Ok, so I've had an 03 and an 04. 5. My 03 would get over 20mpg. I loved it. Unfortunately some dick ruined it by not properly installing aftermarket injectors. Read my posts to see who. I remember the day when I could drive over 600 miles on one tank of gas. Now my 04. 5 gets 16 or17. Dodge even took the power lumbar support out of my 04. 5 to save a buck, what cheap *** bureaucrats! Why are we buying diesels? Sure, you can plug in 200 hp in a couple of minutes. Is changing 3 gallons of oil worth it. Or changing my fuel filter every 5000 miles so my high pressure injectors don't fail worth it? How about diesel being the most expensive fuel for the last 3 or 4 years? Not to mention the $5000 upgrade cost when you purchase the diesel over the Hemi. This is definately the most expensive truck I've ever been suckered into. Their accountants have the cost of a vehicle per year on all kinds of graphing software, and I'm sure the diesel is not a winner. What about the turbo lag and drivability? Sure, they're quick, but your not going to leave a Hemi by any means, unless you have a few grand under the hood. Plus I have to add 10 o. z. of fuel additive every time I fill up so my injectors don't fail. A pain in the *** as far as I'm concerned, and gassers are so much more responsive! If I want to make a left hand turn forget it until the light is yellow cause by the time the turbo gets spooled your gonna be broadsided. Anyone else?
Towing with a gasser is unsafe in my opinion, it will not maintain the speed limit up hill, far from it. It is hard to find a hill that will slow a diesel to under the speed limit. All that has to happen is someone driving without adequate sleep realizes too late you are traveling much slower than they expected and CRASH. I spent 16 years on the road driving a semi (1966 to 1982) and altho I was never involved in a highway accident I have seen my share. City accidents are mostly fender benders but on the highway they are mostly fatal. This was my reason to have a Dodge Ram with a Cummings in it. I do tow and when I do I do not want to be a highway hazard. Cummings is a first class engine, too bad the Dodge Ram leaves so much to be desired but once you replace the light duty parts with heavy duty you have a better truck. My 98 12v is now a heavy duty. When a part failed I bought heavy duty to replace it. I only go to a Dealer (*******) to buy a vehicle and I never return, if I can't fix it I know honest people that can. They brought it on themselves, at least as far as I am concerned.

ok i didnt read all 8 pages yet... ... but chris, ya need to stop bickering... ... . 16-17 mpg with your setup is about right..... you do the mods halfassed w/o complimenting them with other mods for example box and higher flowing injectors means new turbo to cool that excess fuel and USE IT to make mileage go up..... by the way, whats your pyro runnin(or do you have one of those guage thingys to monitor stuff?) also, with all that fuel your trying to run, do you have a lift pump?

heres my point, im glad you have all that bling high school bs, im sure your truck looks wonderful, but if you cant build the truck right dont buld it at all.

its retarded people(im not saying your completely retarded) that kill the mood for the rest of us. yes our trucks will break(you play you pay) when you push the envelope like ALOT of us have. but u cant just start stackin boxes with big injectors w/o knowing what else you have to do to either keep the fuel supply up, EGTs cool, and so on... ... ... .

go buy your damn hemi go to there forum, we dont wanna hear it

PS: hemis are slow and i DONT have $2K under my hood in motor work..... just the correct parts for my modifications and voula, suck smoke hemi!!

sorry, by everybody

Compairisons

I am not going to single any statement out by anybody I just want to show a few NON believers the facts. No matter what you do to a gasser of any size of any auto maker they will never in the long run be what a diesel is. The photos below will show what my experience has been with the best built, best engineered, best of class truck that GOD himself allowed to evolve into. If the outlay of maybe 5 grand extra for a diesel gives you heartburn knowing you may not get but 9-13mph while towing and you are not going to keep the rig but a year or two don't even consider a diesel. It really takes hard work to tow a rig like the photos below. Now if you tow on all flat land all the time and don't mind 7-8mpg then a gasser is what you need. If you plan to trade often enough to only put 50-75k on your truck buy a gasser. If you want a real hauler that will give you extended service buy the best. You are facing 10% uphill/downhill grades and making reverse moves into camping sites at 8%, you had better have your rig in tiptop shape. Even the largest of gassers will not give you the long term service of a good diesel.

I am on my 3rd diesel and love it. My truck is used for daily driving but I bought it mainly for hauling around the jeep. I have a friend that has a hemi sport 4x4 and he tows the almost same jeep I have. He get a whopping 10mpg towing the exact same route I do. He uses a tank up and a tank back, I use a quarter tank up and a quarter tank back. That Is Why I Bought My Diesel.

I'm on my 2nd diesel (Cummins) and love it. I wouldn't have it any other way. If you are going to tow heavy, a gasser will wear out soon. I know, I wore out two engines on a F250 Furd towing a 29' 5er. These were Furd's largest gassers.

We use our diesel Rams as daily drivers and for us it is well worth the investment. My wife drives her 03 2500 64 miles round trip to work each day. Seh gets 17 to 18 mpg. My 93 gets the same and my 02 3500 gets 13 to 15 mpg, 9 to 11 towing our 17K lb 5er. We have not seen a drop in fuel mileage on our trucks w/ ULSD.

All three trucks are turned up... if and when we by another maybe we won't turn up the power.

Diesels are not for everyone, but they are the ticket for us.
