Anyone know of a reasonable Bottoming Tap?

Anyone know where I can purchase a reasonable bottoming tap for installing my head studs? Not to mention the length its got to be.

Stupid question i'm sure... But what it the reason behind tapping before installing headstuds??? Does everyone do it??? Thanks Wesley

just give you a little more material for the studs to hold too

The main reason head bolts only go in so far so you have some thread left at the bottom of the hole that may need cleaned up,so the studs will bottom out in the bottom of the hole.

So you still have to use an extension & socket huh? I can't wait . I believe my lower backs already beginning to hurt :-laf. Instructions say to retorque 4 times, oh me... ...

if you are pulling one head bolt tapping cleaning and installing head studs you only have to do it once I did mine at 125 ftlb and went to the next one. I am running 50 psi of boost and nitrous and factory gasket with just studs. If you cant find a tap you pay for shipping and you can borrow mine.

I put studs on my '96 and wish I'd used a bottoming tap. After the years and miles I wasn't able to screw the studs in as deep as I wanted.

I am guessing it's not possible to bottom tap with the head in place because the distance you have to go down?

So what do you do, grease the end of the tap to catch the debris from tapping? Or do you just leave it in the bottom of the hole? Im assuming the hole is blind?

R Painter thanks for the offer, that means alot, I bought one. Is it true I'll have to clearance my valve cover in the front and back? I've been told the studs wont clear 100%.

R Painter one more question for ya, do you have to loosen the factory insulation to get to the plugs that are in the cowl for the rear head bolts?

you have to clearance the riser box that the injector wires are in. I just used one hand to push the insulation up as far as possible and used the other hand to drop in the tap.

I used a little grease and a little brake cleaner and then compressed air. you will never get it all out just try your best and be patient

Take a piece of copper tubing and put it on the end of an air chuck and blow out the holes.
