Seems most are commenting on a 64SS13 not a 62SS13. Going from a 14 to a 13 exhaust housing but keeping the 71mm exhaust wheel shouldn't produce drastically different results.

I've not run the 62SS13 yet, but have run the SPS62, and HTB2/14, and am looking forward to trying the SS13 very soon.

The individuals I have talked to that have run the 62SS13, do like it.

Yes you are correct, most that are having issues with the SS turbo are running the 64/71/13SS on 3rd gens.

The way HTT describes their stainless steel exhaust housing is that on a common turbo the stainless exhaust will spool quicker and about 200 RPM lower than an equivalent cast housing. This sounds perfect for my application as I want a street friendly daily commuter vehicle... . :D

Have you ever driven a SP62 or an HTB2 with a 12 or 14 housing. They're very quick on spool up on a 3rd gen and not too shabby on a 2nd gen. Seeing that you have a stick, that's even better.

The main difference will be the 71mm exhaust wheel now mated to a 13 housing vs the typical 14 housing. Keeping this with the 62, I can't see this being an overwhelming issue.

I can see this being an issue with the 64, if you don't have the fuel to run it.

No I have not driven a SPS 62/14, this is what worries me. I want a turbo that I can run with my M4s or M1. 6s and a non-pump piecing fueling box and I do not want something that I will out go. Just incase something happens and I want more power. But right now engine reliability/longevity is still a concern

I would say Herberram nailed it when he said that people that do not like the turbo have mismatched the turbo to their needs. I have sold several of the HTTss turbos and have had 0 complaints about them.

I recently spoke to Dennis at HTT about upgrading my htb2 and he said they are a little behind the learning curve with what housing works best with what wheel on which generation of 24v right now. He told me that on my 2nd gen to just change the housing to the new stainless steel 13cm and I wont be disappointed. He also said they have been getting complaints from unhappy customers and they are listening to what people are saying. Any time something new comes out their are gonna be hickups on these pickups. Give it some time.

I don't think you will get any of these bigger turbos to perform well for you unless you tap the pump. They need the extra fuel to spool decent. It will smoke more down low without better fueling and you will need to keep the rpms up to get performance from it. I would think smaller like an sp62 not an sps62. You may get better performance without a tap.

I agree... . if the pump isn't tapped you aren't going to benefit from the larger exhaust wheel. They require alot more fuel to make boost. I have run every turbo that HT has to offer in the 62 & 64 configurations & for me the SS62 is the greatest thing in the world. I always tell guys that the HTB2 62/12 is a perfect turbo for a truck that has 100hp injectors & a mild fueling box like EZ or equal [375-400hp range]. A HTB2 62/14 is perfect for 100hp sticks, Edge Comp or equal [425hp range]. A SS62 is for guys running 125-150hp sticks, Edge comp or equal [500hp range]. Just my $. 02.

Now I am starting to hear some unbias responses about the S/S housings. This is appreciated and I know there will always be some issues in technology changes/advancements. HTT is a very reputable company and I am sure they will work things out with their new housing. Just right now I want a turbo that will work nicely with my truck

From what I have read I would have thought that a HTT Super Stock 62/14 or SPS 62/14 from II would fit the bill for my HO truck with the 150+HP sticks plus just a EZ or Smarty. I would be figuring this would put me easily in the 450HP range and enough fuel to move these chargers. At first I was only considering a HTB2 62/14 but alot of people have been saying the 71mm wheel is the way to go

My main concern is reliability and everyday drivability without pushing things too far. I am still on my original VP and would like to think that not tapping into the pump has something to do with this.

If you have 150hp sticks..... go with the SS62. I drive my truck everyday with my injectors & Smarty. The turbo spools very nicely with the combo & I even tow 15k# daily when it doesn't rain. I've tried alot of different turbos with 150hp sticks & the SS62 is by far the best. I didn't see the injectors in your sig & would never recommend a HTB2 with 150hp sticks... . sorry.

With what you want I would stay with a smaller housing. go with a 62/12 I think you would be unhappy with a 62/14 with out tapped pump unless you drive at higher rpms with the 6 spd transmission.

It seems I am in between turbo sizes with my fueling mods. I either go with the 65mm wheel or the 71mm wheel. Roughly at what RPM will 62/71/14 start to spool?

Maybe I should just throw in my M1. 6s and keep the stock turbo. Hell I barely have to watch the pyro while empty and running just the M4s for the last 18 months.

Do I sound confused... :--)

the spool up problem has to be the 64mm comp wheel... I haven't heard anything good about it in either HTT or II's turbos... will HTT sell just the turbine housing for those who have already got a pro street?

OK guys, I'm in the same boat as the rest of you, I had Tim at TRE do my 62/71/13/ss and was not all that impressed on the way home. (Not impressed with the turbo that is . . Tim is great. ) Drove home about 1 1/2 hours ready to bite through nails. Parked the truck and let it sit a couple of days. Finally got over it and started to work on it, check and tighten up everything. Drove it again and seemed better, still only hitting 35-38 boost but pulling good after 10psi. Ran the drag comp at all and any settings and found that 3x3 good for cruising and 4x5 5x5 is where its at, the turbo LOVES the fuel. Also found that if you defuel the comp EGTs go up it won't spool properly, add more fuel spools early and can run 5x5 all the way to OD hits then it starts hitting 1400-1500 because of 354's and 35" tires. So cruising not much difference in EGT's from my S300, but under power is where you should notice the 62ss shine, Egts hit 1150-1200 and hold with truck floored through 1st 2, 3. So really I'm just learning how to drive the truck again and learn the new sweet spot (no one tells you that). Only because I'm so dam smart I figured well if the 62ss likes the fuel I'll give it more, called Tim and said send me a smarty please, need to fuel the 62ss at the low end to lite it. Got it and HOLY COW...comp at 3x3 and smarty sw6 almost no lag boost comes up fast even at low RPM. VERY HAPPY. . still only making 36-38psi ... need to fix that, 42psi would be good for stock. I'm still tinkering but on the right path. . time to tow the camper!

Sorry for the long post but thats my 62ss story. I found that tweaking may be needed to get the most from your turbo!!

Drag comp+sticks+smarty+62/71/13ss=WOW!!

Anyone wondering TRE/Tim is great and if you ride in his truck bring a HANS device. . lol

I will post anything else I may find!

Buddy

I'm assuming you've got a fair amount of smoke rolling out of that thing before/while it lights up?

Yes, if possible I would like to know this too. Controlled smoke is GTG :-laf but blackening out an intersection every time you start off from a light is not good

Also, how loud is the turbo whine, will it be annoying under load?
