Got the code of death, 70K Miles, Fuel Press always above 9psi,
mostly 12 psi.

Missed a shift ( Hit 6th instead of 4th on a down shift )
Bucked a few times and quite for an instant, before I could get the clutch in.

Checked codes, code of death ( ip Timing )

At 70k, I figure i might as well do the replace and save original as a spare. .

Advice on best rebuilds... .

Also, If I went to a HP pump ( like Sheid )would I still get good Fuel milage,
( 16-17 mpg with a 3k Truck camper at present )? I do not plan on doing any real
power upgrades, just the Smarty on level 3 now , and future 4 '' exhaust .

? And : Are the High HP IP's more or less reliable????

My first priority is reliability!!!! would like to get 100k mils out of the next IP. .

Note: With the Smarty, I notice the throttle is quite sensitive on rough roads, and when lugging ( wrong gear ) ;
bouncing truck, bouncing foot, and low RPM , the truck really bucks and jumps.

Could this set a code without any mech problems with the IP?????

I bought mine from http://mwfi.com/
That's midwest fuel injection. They do NOT charge up front for the core charge.

they are first rate folks and excellent customer service. I can vouch for that. a warehouse packer left out some parts on my order. MWFI sent the missing parts RED Label airfreight overnight!!!

Also, the same can be said for Industrial Injection in Salt Lake City. However, they charge a core up front.

YMMV. Both are 5 star rated.

Industrial Injection in Salt Lake City does make a fine pump. I have been running one of their Rebuilt Pumps for about 20,000 miles, and it seems to be holding up well (my 4th VP44).

If I were you, I would run your VP44 until it dies. They are too expensive to change just because a code came up.

I would do what Rich suggests RJ. My thought is since you bucked the motor hard you may have caused reverse-slack between the timing gears and the ECM saw a momentary discrepancy between the crank position and pump. I'd just keep driving it for now and see how it does.

My problem is, most of my driving is away from home,
Truck camper, on back roads and remote areas,
Just would hate to get stranded 50 miles back on a logging road. .
or in the switch backs of tenn/WV etc... .
also Would like to do the alaska trip maybe in Aug or next spring...

Great to be retired...

get a tool list together and a spare vp44 if you're worried about reliability.

I'd clear the code and drive it, like others said, at least for now.

Wish you were closer, I would get you one in, in no time. I use only Industrial Injection pumps, your answer on the HRVP will not net you any more fuel mileage. The HRVP is based off the pump you have now in your truck, and the sensitive throttle response is the way a HR would be too. The only gains you will have if you went to a hot rod pump is the amount of fuel you can deliver to the injectors over the stock one you have in the truck now. Although the advantage is new case, and most new internals. Your mileage right now may be down do to the fact your case is wore in your VP in your truck now, once you change it mileage in most cases comes up.

I don't know anyone in your area that I could point you too. Good Luck Jim.

You can change it yourself. Its not all that hard. Need a couple of tools, and a little patience. Hardest part is getting out some of the bolts cause they are at an angle. I combo swivel socket would help.

Post if you need directions

I searched long and hard back when mine went bad. I ended up going with Oregon Fuel Injection. Come to find out, Some vendors just have OFI's pumps drop shipped or stock them for sale. I've had ZERO pump problems since.

i also have a oregon fuel injection pump. i bougt mine through Rip at source automotive. spectacular guy to deal with. he sold it to me for a good price and he is the only guy i know of that will warranty a vp44 with WIRE TAP. i had called a few of the big names but no one would give me a straight answer on full warranty with the wire being tapped. you just need to tell him that you will tap it.

Comments about my Scheids pump

RJ I have the Scheids lightning on my 99 and to respond to one of your first questions. I actually INCREASED mileage when going from my stock VP to their pump. I've already been through the TDR hazing of replacing a perfectly good VP with a Scheids pump, I would do it again. I am enjoying the MPG gain and the added performance. Dan Scheid and Brad Ingram have both been great to deal with. Call them up I am sure they can say alot more than I can. The group of us up here in Michigan that use their pumps and swear by them.
