I have always had 12valves, but the supply of 98 quad cab 12v's is low, at least on my budget. So this time I am looking at 2nd gen 24v's. You guys have scared the crap out of me about buying a 24v. I have read all the posts.

I know not to buy a 53 block. If the lift pump and the vp44 are good are the 24v dependable? Are the pump failures total or can you get home? Can you check codes on a 98 or 99 without a scanner? If I have a good vp44 and a new lift pump and a fuel pressure gauge to monitor is it a dependable rig?

Thanks.

yes you can check codes on the 98. 5 and 99 24 valves with a scanner. In my opinion the 24v are dependable especially if you monitor Fuel Pressure. If your going to replace your lift pump i would recommend going to an after market pump like a walbro, holly blue, fass, or something similar. I have not ever had a single problem at all with mine. As far as i know, i think you can usually tell if the pump is going and can get home before it does, but i dont know for sure, its never happened to me. I love mine, and wouldn't hesitate buying another one, just keep an eye on fuel pressures, and you should be fine

In many cases, the VP-44 will show some symptoms before failing completely... . low power, dead pedal, check engine lights etc. However, they can and will fail on occasion without warning. But, as stated before, a fuel pressure gauge and good supply pump is a great step toward overall reliability.

Bought mine with 75k miles in 01 and it has 154k now. Same VP, was all stock when I bought it - see signature for mods. Wen't through 3 stock LPs before I decided to go with the GFS-392 unit Spring laste year - it's a nice system, 20 psi idle and never seen below 17 @ WOT comp 5/5.

All I can say is that my 98. 5 with 453000kms has never failed to start, never broken down, fuel injection pump is original,on #4 lift pump. I have had gauges since new and used hawes meaner and mmo in every tank. 2wd. have less troubles than 4x4s. Having said all that the 12 valve is much simpler and therefore less chance for problems. As these 24 valves get older there are more things to go wrong especially electrical. my 2cts.

For what it's worth, and I know you're looking at an early 2nd gen, my 01 has the original LP and VP44 and I'm at almost 106,000 miles. It's 100% stock, and I have no plans to mod it..... I have enough power for what I need to do with it... I know, I know, let the flaming begin, LOL!!!

yes it is dependable, barring any problems from the lift pump and injector pump. I, personally have over 200k on mine, and, the big "have to have" part would be a fuel pressure guage.

Don't mess with it

your not gonna hear it from me I had a stock 9512v and it did everything I wanted even had the stock exhaust then I boght a 2000 6spd truck with bigger injectors allready installed the I felt the power then the sickness started and spread quick now I can't get enough so if your happy leave it alone but as soon as you mess with it its all over and you'll never be satisfied
