How to take care of wood trailer decks??

Mopar Nats Towing Report

Do the various makers of Cummins powered pusher diesel MH's thru the mid 90's, '95 - '98, pretty much use the same engines as used in the Dodge pickups for the same years, or are they higher powered commercial units along the lines of the marine engines?

We're sorta looking for one in the 32 foot or shorter range, and finding a few - but the owners rarely seem to know anything detailed about the engines themselves - they will tell you all about the carpet, couch fabric and decor - but seem clueless where the mechanical stuff comes in!:-laf

Yes I do not remember the name but a buddy had a 93 pusher with a cummins in it pulling his 16 ft trailer with a toyota pick/up on it went to Oklahoma and got 13 mpg with it not bad for a wind block going down the freeway . I believe his was a 33 footer also

Gary for the most part they are the exact same engines that are in our trucks. Remember the 275RV injectors for the 24v? Yes that is where they came from. The engines were available stock up to 300hp in models up to 2005. In 2006 they went to the 6. 7 motor. The RV manufacturers felt safe uprating the hp because they had larger cooling areas. The best part is that any of the power upgrades that have been devised for our motors work with the motor Cummins too. I have a 2004 Vectra with the 8. 3 Cummins that unfortunatly the only upgrades are from Banks. But when the Banks computer is working I get another 100 hp and 2 more mpg. But it has been back to Banks twice and is headed there again. It does not seem to be able to retain its programming.

Thanks for the info guys - so far, I'm sorta shooting for about a '96 or '97 P-pumped rig with a 6 speed Allison - we'll see if I can find one or not! :D

I have two friends with mid-90's 5. 9 pushers. Each have a 5. 9 Cummins, 230hp, p-pump and 6spd Allison. Both are considering going to a straight pipe. The exhaust tubing has a 90deg, muffler and 180deg bend to make it out the back. One of them has done the full Banks kit. He tows an enclosed trailer with race Jeep. The Banks kit could obviously be done cheaper with enough research.

Gary,

While your in the look-in' mode keep in mind that a lot of the rigs with the B series engine will try your patience when it comes time to work on them. Some are very cramped and can cause a person to invent some new words:mad: GW

Actually, ALL the MH's I have seen are hard to work on in the engine area - fortunately, The Cummins requires far less regular maintenance in the upper engine area as compared to a gasser...

Well I know that it would probably be quite a bit larger than your looking for but my son brought a Travco over to the house to do a service and run the overhead on and it was cavernous inside. I don't think I've ever seen one that was as spacious as this one and it had an M11 in it. It had about two feet on both sides and naturally when you lift up the bed it was very open. Too bad they all aren't like that... .....

A buddy of mine used to have a '94 Santana IIRC , built on a Freightliner chassis... 210 horse Cummins 5. 9 and a 4 speed Allison, started to be a bit weak when he put a 28' enclosed trailer behind it, sold it and bought a newer unit with a 8. 3 and a 6 speed allison. No problems now!!:-laf

WELL, what sort of got me started on this subject, is that info on a '94 Gulfstream MH I was looking at, indicated there were *2* Cummins engine options, either a 190 HP, or a 230 HP - and I didn't recall there being that option on the '94 Dodge/Cummins equipped trucks...

SO, that got me wondering if MH makers perhaps used other, marine or commercial based Cummins for their use...

The Dodge/Cummins combo is one of a kind and shares very little with other makes of Cummins users in the Commercial Automotive Industry. They are all related, however each industry seems to use there own "pieces and parts" for the engine package.

Marine, automotive, agriculture, industrial and power units are all related yet very different.

Mind if I highjack this thread for a moment and ask what 6 speed allison is behing those 5. 9s? I so sick and tired of my ATS "wimpy" t/c that I'm ready to chance the whole thing for an allison. Also, will it bolt up to the 271 t-case?

Bart , there is a guy [ Gabe ] on DTR , that has done the conversion on these trucks , last I saw it was running about 30+ pages .

Thanks for the info. I did get a call from the owner of ATS and he says that he designed the valve body and thinks he knows the problem. I hope so. I'm sure not pleased with it right now, but they are now trying to correct the problem. Thanks again
