I know this is a long shot, but I think my belt jumping problem is a misalignment and not the tensioner. One of the things I changed on my motor when I got it was a reman alternator. After looking up the one I got on the partsamerica website, it lists probably 50 applications. If you look up a more expensive one, it only lists 90-93 trucks. I think its possible that the alternator I have may be offset slightly too far foward causing my belt to ride against the front of my fan pulley. I know remaned parts get thrown in one catagory sometimes over looking very minor differences, like steering boxes for our trucks. There are 4. 25 lock to lock and I think the other is 3. 5 lock to lock, but they don't list that as a difference when buyin one. So could one of y'all please post a picture of your alternator (original if possible) mounted on your truck so I can see if there is some kind of diffence. Thanks, Alex

Thanks! I can't see a difference either, but it would probably only be about an 1/8 inch. I'm gonna play with it this weekend and try and figure something out. I don't want to just start throwing parts at it, or I would definitely try a tensioner. But, they are a little to pricy to try for the heck of it, especially since I can't find any wear on mine, and mine isn't jumping at the A/C compressor.

AK, look at the tensioner. Is the belt running in the middle, or off to one side a little? On the trucks, it seems the pulleys go. On the equipment at work (case) and my truck, it seems to be the tensioner itself. There is a plastic (teflon, poly, somthin') washer/ bushing in side that wears, letting the arm move out causing a misalignment. The belt walks off a little on the pulley, then it walks 1 rib on the alternator, then 2, then 3, then it cuts 1 or 2 off. See where this is going? :{

If the tensioner goes, you can see the pulley is twisted a little.

Hope this helps,

Here's mine.

Looks pretty much the same to me.

After messing with it today, it still comes down to the alternator is too far foward. I'm wondering if I have the wrong pulley. Looking at your pictures, it looks like your pulley is a larger diameter and sits back a little bit more than mine. Whats the outside diameter of your pulley? Thanks, Alex

Alex, now that you mention it, it does look like yours is a little forward of the alternator rlyons pictured. Did they put your old pulley on the "new" alternator?

It's a little late for you now, but this is precisely why I prefer to have stuff rebuilt locally rather than get some unknown crapola from the local yay-hoo parts store. But it is convenient to buy it, throw the new one on, then return your core, if you dont have a second vehicle.

I did reuse my original pulley, because the rebuilt one came with a 2 groove v-belt pulley on it. But, I suspect the alternator was changed before I got the donor truck, and that's when the factory correct pulley got gone. I do use a guy locally to rebuild stuff for me on things that I want to keep my original part, but I also like the forever warranty you get from a parts store.
