Television Recommendation????

OK - I'm afraid this may be like so many other subjects we discuss - BUT here goes - When I go to the electronic superstores - man they are confusing... . I've researched this - BUT to be honest - often the most expensive - and the ones with the best specs - don't look any better..... NOW I know most are running a HD player of some type - or a computer or satellite HD Feed - so the picture looks as good as it will -



I'm looking at a 40-50" - not sure on Plasma or LCD either... ... recommendation

Go Westinghouse LCD, you get to most bang for your buck. You give up some viewing angle to the plasma's and surrounding light can be a problem but these are minor problems that can usually be easily addressed. Now if your living room is surrounded by huge plate glass windows you might want to think plasma. I own a 37" and the picture rivals any I have seen plasma or LCD while being hundreds of dollars less. It also has a myriad of inputs from HDMI, to VGA to standard coax. I have a HDDVD player, computer, comcast digital box, Xbox 360 and DVD/vcr hooked up to mine and it has the built in digital HD reciever for over the air broadcast. The larger ones lacked the over the air digital reciever at the time I bought it which is why I went with the 37" over the the 42".

I had a Westinghouse 32" LCD I bought from Best Buy. It was a great price! After about 4 months it wouldn't turn on. Best Buy came out and said no replacement parts are available for this TV. I upgraded to a Sony 32" and have never looked back.

Good question on the TVs. The wife and I are planning on getting something around 52" and a surround sound setup at the same time.



I've started looking at Costco and Walmart but am a little leary of some of these off brand units (Vizio?). I've always tried to stick with name brand but often wonder if it's money wasted on buying the name. I've heard about the short life span on Plazma so I figure LCD or DLP. As far as sound goes I think I'll need to find something wireless so I don't have to run wires all over the living room.



We're waiting until around Christmas so I have time to figure this out and watch for "deals" but it'll probably turn into a staring contest with one of the younsters working at Best Buy. Anyone else tend to educate themselvs on what they are about to purchase, then get to the store and end up frustrated when the little punks either start lying or have no clue about what they are trying to sell?



Anyways, I'm also curious to know what else folks have been happy with.

The Sharp "92" series looks great fast 4 ms refresh LCD less power consumption than plasma . No glare from windows/ sunlight, 1080p . Watch the "entry level " stuff from the box stores. Do your own research.

I chose an LCD (Sony 40") because the screen life is supposed to be very long & LCD's use less power. The plasma's that I was shown were warmer than the LCD's. One salesperson said that you could heat up a room, in the winter, with a large plasma TV. I'm sure he was joking but, maybe not?????

Sony's were always considered to be the best in the industry. However, my understanding is that has changed. I needed a TV, quickly, & just got the Sony because of my previous experiences with their products.



I recently heard that the day after Thanksgiving, many of the stores are going to have huge discounts on TV's. They said that you could expect to find 32" LCD/Plasma's for around $300. 00, that day.



I, also, heard that Toshiba has come out with new LCD crystals that are very easy & cheap to make & that should reduce prices of TV's, by quite a bit. So far, I haven't seen that many price drops.



I am not an electronics expert, by any means. Just passing on information that I have heard recently & when I was looking for my new LCD.

I've never heard of VIZIO either but i did consumer reports on it and as far as i could find in the 42" version vizio they actually have a GOOD rating and was a top pick for consumer reports...

Don't the LCD screens tend to "smear" a little in quick action like close-ups of car racing or a baseball bat swinging?

That's why my rec was the Sharp 4ms refresh , I like the DLP's but they aren't fast enough

I have changed my size - will be replacing a TV in

our bedroom - currently an old 27" RCA - like maybe 20 years old... ... but we have a custom made solid - and I mean solid - walnut large TV Unit... . (Amish family friends that have made furniture for over 100 years - all of our house is from one family furniture maker - solid Walnut and Cherry) and I can only get a 32" TV in... ... .

That's why my rec was the Sharp 4ms refresh , I like the DLP's but they aren't fast enough

Now all the 32" LCD's are 720 P Max EXCEPT - the Sharp..... and they make 2 models - one for gamers.....

I have a 65" toshiba dlp and I love it. I have never had a smearing prob. watching football, nascar or any other sport for that matter.

I feel that TV robs family time and family relationships are more important than watching TV. The furniture is pointed at each other.

Joel, you're right. We went a year (20 yrs ago) with no tv. Had lots more time for the important things. Read much more.



When I suggest it now all I get are "are you crazy" looks and comments.

I learned recently that Vizio is an American company and really appear to make a good product at a good price. In my very humble opinion, Mitsubishi still makes the best TV.

I have been starting to learn a bit about Vizio as well. Looks like I'll have to read some more reviews, might be an option.
