the way the bost comes on is a little diferent than alot of other programers. it's diferent even than other versions of the smarty software.

the reason for seeing the lower boost is due to the increse in eficency the engine is not working as hard. effort=boost.

im a beta tester for marco/bob, i have run almost every version of the software out there. when i was asked to test the smarty jr software i was sceptical at first, but kept an open mind. due to the fuel/timing maps that the smarty/jr use it is much more melow than previous software, it also doesnt build boost or egt's as quick as previous versions. boy was i suprised when i hit the dyno for an entire day of testing. the software makes every bit of clamed power (and then some)

my take on a tuner vs. a box:

id much rather have a tuner that properly maps the fuel/timing/presure curves, than to deal with the issues and shortcomings from a box that is trying to fool the ecm into doing something.

yes the xtz might " feel more fun " but hit the dyno, run it down the road , throw a load on it, test it however you want, i bet the smarty/jr will outperform it. not only in sheer power, but egt, economy, and driveability. dont confuse choppy power delivery with more power.

Question on download time and updates

Just got my JR and loaded it today. If this thing has the fastest download time in the industry I would hate to see the slow ones.

It took 12 minutes just to down load, thats not counting the plug in and key cycling at the end of it, about 15 minutes total. Is this normal? My 2nd gen only takes about 2 minutes.

Also during the first 5 minutes there was a pump under the hood running Maybe fuel transfer pump. Then the last few minutes there was a thumping sound like possibly injectors firing until download was complete. Is this all normal?

I just loaded level 1 and the timing rattle is really noticeable to me and I have a 60% hearing loss in 1 ear and 20% loss in the other. Throttle is smooth. Not a real big difference but definately noticeable.

I see in other threads that people are already updating the JR. I thought they were shipped with the latest programming?

Got mine today and downloaded it. . . about 5-6 minutes max maybe.

I heard lots of noises also. . I noticed the timing rattle a little. . but have only gone around the block... going to the airport later... should be a fun trip.

on the fence

O. K. guys has anyone been able to keep foot off the right pedel enough to get any mpg #'s yet? I saw one post that said 1 mpg inprovement and another that said 20% I think. Anyone else want to give any numbers?Oo.

mpg

Had the smarty jr since this past monday and has been driven 80 miles round trip everyday (3 days) on secondary roads, Tried a different setting on each day & the 40 hp gave better throttle but the overhead mpg was reading 18-19. The 70hp was reading 23-24 & the 100hp read 21-22. Now that was driving relatively the same way on each trip. In the past my overhead was always 2mpg more than what i got by hand calculations, which i have not done yet. Also my speedo was always 2mph faster than my gps,so i changed the tire height with the smarty, the factory setup read 1" taller tire than what was on the truck. Since the speedo is correct now I'll see if the overhead mpg is closer to the hand calulations. IMO i was getting better mgp 18-20 with the factory tune than i was getting on the 40hp (econo. ),keep in mind that this was all on secondary roads 45-55mph & no load. Hope this info helps. Might get different results on highway driving. I'am going to run the 70hp & overall I'am pleased with the smarty jr.

Bob the overhead will read worse with the Smarty, do hand calcs only , I found the best with middle position. I am happy with mine too

I am curious how the Jr affects the overhead. I am hoping it will be as "accurate" as stock because all the parameters are in the ECM... but I am not sure if the duration affects the OH on SW#2&3... So far I have only tried SW#1 and even when romping on my 40 mile drive last night the OH went up . 4

Well my 1st impression. . I LIKE IT

I have the SW #1 (40hp) loaded. . I am not really sure how they can call it fuel economy when its SOO much fun... thou I will say in 40 miles, with 6-7 WOT bursts and many 3/4 pulls I went from 16. 7 on the OH to 16. 9...

What I have noticed,

EGT: around 1600-2000 rpm EGT's are very similar. . below 1600 and above they are noticeably lower.

Boost: Under normal driving boost is lower. I used to accelerate around town and hold 10psi, that was moderate acceleration, now 10psi is moving out. To get the same acceleration as before I am less than 5 psi... so staying out of boost is much easier, but on the same token you can pull boost easier as well. . I have seen about 34 but there isn't enough load on the truck to really see... either I redline in 5th or get going much much too fast in 6th. And in the lower gears by the time your foot is on the floor your having to shift.

Cruising at 70 boost is about 3-4 psi less, and EGT's are about 75 less. I have yet to see more than 1000 on the pyro. . but like I said too much power to hold a gear long enough to place a load, and its 28* outside.

At power changes there is a small puff of black smoke, and in low boost there is a haze, but nothing serious and once the boost rolls in it goes away. I do hear a TINY amount of timing rattle, just makes it sound more like a diesel, and a HO VP44 truck idled by me tonight and its still MUCH quieter.

So all in all I am very happy, only 40 miles so far thou... I do pick up my new RV tomorrow so maybe I can put a load on it and see where boost and EGTs will get.

I was on the fence with this mod until xmas. . and only did it because I wanted lower EGT's for the new trailer... but WOW its a very worth while mod. You can tell it makes more power by the lack of effort required to get moving, and remember SW #1 is timing only. . so there is no more fuel just a more powerful burn.

I have found it to be worse 3-4 mpg. I wish Marco could do a program similar to the tire dia change.

I've only ran 1/4 tank through on mine.

Had the Jr. for one week as of today.

Filled up. 12. 67 gallons Trip meter was 207 miles. Approx 16. 3 mpg. Last tank before Jr. was 16. 08 mpg. Not a significant increase in mpg, but the performance is noticable.

More performance without losing MPG is ok with me.

Bob which position were you running?

Don

OK... . I've got some fuel mileage info. I drove from Tulsa OK. to n. e. PA. plus some local driving. I drove 1492. 2 miles and used 72. 548 gal. = 20. 568 mpg. and that was with my 2005 slt 4x4 6spd. running Toyo 295/70/17 MT's. the speedo was recalibrated and I ran the 70 hp setting. Last year my truck got 19. 24 mpg stock w/ the Michelins ... round trip. I had bad weather on my trip to Pa. my truck was very iced up in OK. & Missourri during last weeks storm. I drove mostly 60-65 mph. I give more info on my trip back. :)

I done a MPG check with the Smarty Jr. on someone else's truck, mine's staying stock until warranty is up. Anyhow,I ran the same interstate on the same day with the same wind conditions (approx. 5-8 MPH SW wind) running south 60. 7 miles and then turning around and running back north on both stock and Jr. runs. I ran 65 MPH as per speedo, the GPS said 64. 2 Average. The outside temperatures were -8*F. Filled up at the same pump facing the same direction both times. Miles driven per run was 121. 6. I have the tank vent modification so I can fill to the top of the tank. I filled until fuel was ready to spill out of the fill spout both runs. The truck was fully warmed up as I had to drive 65 Miles just to get to where I filled on with fuel to do the interstate run. This was unloaded driving on the 2nd level = tow mode.

Before Smarty Jr. = (stock)
121. 6 miles=
18. 25 MPG
625 EGT's

After loading Smarty Jr. on towing mode which is level 2 on Jr.
121. 6 miles=
19. 42 MPG
490 - 525 EGT's

Sorry, had to return the truck before I could do the other settings. <!-- / message -->

My around town mpg is down with the 70hp setting but unless you are dead behind the wheel you all will understand why it is down. I may back down to the 40hp setting. I haven't been on a freeway trip yet with it.

Yaaaaaa I finaly got to install jr on my truck today and dang if its not a LOT of fun. I tried it on the 40 first and it was great then i turned up the MP-8 and it moved very very well. then I decided to go for broke and load the 100 seting and WOW it pretty quick and very driveable then I turn the MP-8 up again and hit the highway, lets just say merging will never be much of a problem ever. I do get a good puff off black smoke on the bottom end but it clears up quick. The timing rattle takes a little bit to get used to but hey its worth it.

How long is it taking others to do the download?

Is it safe to assume that longer duration and more timing won't hurt injectors and only extra pressure will?

And if so at what pressure does it start damage the injectors?

How many of you have damaged injectors with a pressure box?

Just curious.

Should be soon... I ordered mine on xmas day and got it yesterday... thou I am only 1 state over...

I work with a Tim Roberts... and Apache Test Pilot.
