What have you folks done to help protect your new trucks from rusting out when you got them brand new?

With a new truck on order, I want to do whatever I can to help protect it from rusting in the future.

Did anyone use the bedliner paint on there lower portion of the body? What about protecting the fender areas? Anyway to remove the inner fender protectors and get some type of rust proofing paint in there ... or any other effective product?

How about the frame itself? What have you folks used to protect this area?

FATCAT: We live in a very harsh environment here in Atlantic Canada. Tons of road salt with high humidity. Probably harsher than in New England. I myself have used Rust Check since the 80's on everything I drive. I also get Coat and Protect application at the same time as the Rust Check application. My 1993 Jeep Cherokee is used only for winter driving and in 170,000 km I have not painted, replaced any panels or rockers. Lots of these Jeeps in the boneyard with rusted out floor boards etc due to owner neglete. Sure it costs $120 plus to do a vehicle but it is money well spent. My other 1992 Jeep Cherokee is also all original. These vehicles are "white" from the salt residue most of the time and are not washed until spring. To me the product has proven itself to me and countless others over the years.

I'm also in Atlantic Canada, and use Rust Check as well (Rust Check brand name, protect vehicles appearance, proofing companies, manufactures rust preventatives, manufacturer of coatings, manufacturer of rust paints, manufacturer of lubricants and auto repair industry)

my '01 Ram has no rust on it, despite over 300,000 miles of use on salt covered roads.

I, buy the product by the 5 gal. bucket, have the tools & coat my trucks myself every fall, doing the door interiors, fenders, tailgate, box as well as the frame, etc. takes about an hour per truck, and only about 3 quarts if product.

The rust check will seep all over the truck, goes up down and into every cavity. It's a bit messy the next couple of times I wash the truck, but it's well worth it.

good luck

I use bar and chain oil. I heat it up and apply it to the under carriage. As it cools it will thicken and become tacky so it stays put. For inside the doors and tailgate I cut it with a small amount of kerosene so it will flow through my undercoating gun and nozzle better. It gets into all the nooks and crannies and protects very well. It is a bit messy for a few hours but well worth the trouble. I now have quite a few people who want me to do their vehicles too.

I remove my front and rear wheel well liners about once per year (during warm weather) and clean out the crevices.

I removed the inner door skins and coated the inside of all 4 doors with LPS No. 3.

I coated the underside of the truck with Duplicolor Truck Bed Coating. Unfortunately, I was lazy and did no prep work, so the coating didn't stick and is gradually peeling away. As it does, I re-spray with good 'ol Rustoleum flat black.

A few times a year I spray any areas on the frame that have developed surface rust with the same Rustoleum flat black. I also paint parts of the axle housings and brakes that develop surface rust.

My dad used Ziebart on his '94 Ford Aspire. Has ever taken it back for any touch stuff at all. After 13 yrs and almost 300k miles, I saw last summer rust is starting to show its ugly head.

They are using the liquid salt brine around here the past few years. ANY chrome is pushing rust through now. Even if it is 1yr old. Bumpers, grilles, ANYTHING! Doesn't matter hw often you wash either.

I always just get under the truck and wire brush and paint any chipped spots (use a brush not a spray can) on the frame before each winter. Mine still looks very good underneath.

I've also used Ziebart for new vehicle rust protection on all my new vehicles. I've been very happy with their product and have never had a rust issue.

I used to have a 1974 Fiat 124, which a previous owner had Ziebarted. The only thing holding the body together was the paint. :(

I always thought "Auto Armor" worked really well, but I never see those stickers anymore.

Someone ought to come up with a drive-thru oil pool, about 3-4 feet deep, followed by a car wash. :-laf (that would not be too good for hoses and belts, tires, door seals, brake pads)

Only oily, sticky surfaces can keep out the water and salt. Any undercoating will eventually rust out from underneath.

More importantly, spray with grease or chain lube around all u-joints, wheel and differential seals, etc. People in the salt belt complain the most about bad u-joints, ball joints, wheel bearings.

I was a Ziebart fan while living in IA. Unlike most others they go in the body cavities an addition to the frame.

Had an Isusu pickup sprayed by the dealer with some kind of undercoating once,, was it a waste.

Seems like down here in the states that it is only available in K-Mart.

Can it be purchased in a spray can or do you just paint it on with a brush? I don't have a paint sparyer.

So is this product available in the US also ??????? and you folks in canada apply it directly to your paint ???? hhhhmmmmmmm Oo.
