Fumoto Oil Drain Valve - What's Your Opinion?

I'm considering installing a Fumoto oil drain valve on my '05 CTD and have a few questions for those who are already running on in their rig:



1. Is this part reliable?



2. Any leakage problems?



3. Does it allow ALL of the oil to drain from the pan?



4. On a 4x4 truck, do you recommend WITH or WITHOUT the drain nipple?

Opinions will vary, but...

1 Very reliable.

2 Mine has over 100k, and my dad has over 180k without a leak.

3 It doesn't allow all the oil to drain, but neither does pulling the factory plug (there is a flange).

4 If I did it again, I'd opt for a nipple to extend the tube closer to the ground. I would be more concerned about a 2wd than a 4wd.
 
I have about 10k miles since I put it on. Works great! I did get the nipple to aid in draining into the original containers. I have had no leaks. tkerrigan has a point... make sure the oil is hot. The last time I waited a little too long and it took forever for it to drain.

I've had mine on for 4 years. One of the best mods to the truck. I use a short piece of hose and clamp it over the valve and drop it into my oil drain container and don't have to worry about any oil splash on the driveway.



I pulled my valve once to check to see how much oil was left after it had stopped draining. Only got a few tablespoons with the plug out. I wouldn't worry about it.

I like mine, makes oil change much easier. Mine is without the nipple and I have no problems. Like others have said drian when hot. I do my oil changes on Saturday. When I get home on Friday I slide the pan under the truck and open the valve and let it sit overnight.



The threaded flange in the bottom is the pan does have a couple of groves in it to allow the oil to drain below the top of the flange. If you drill a couple of 1/8" holes just above the seal surface of the drain valve it will allow the last of the oil to drain.

Oh, one more thing you might want to do, when I installed mine the first time, the composition gasket that Fumoto supplied, cracked and I had to drain all the oil to replace it. I went down to the auto parts store with the valve and bought a soft copper gasket. No chance of cracking now.
 
Mine has been flawless. I have the one with the nipple and use a short length of hose to drain directly into 1 gallon milk jugs for recycling. It does drain a little slow so I multi-task.



1- Put first jug under and R&R oil filter while it drains.

2- Swap second jug under and grab grease gun and lube driveshaft and suspension zirks while it drains.

3- Put third (final) jug under and do inspections, top up windshield washer fluid, etc.



By then it is done and I have not spilled a drop. I don’t even use a pan anymore.



If you are doing used oil sampling, this will make your life much easier.

I also chose the EZ drain over the Fumoto. I think that both products work well, I just liked the more tamper resistant design of the EZ drain.



I have them on all of my vehicles.

Same thing happened to me. I replaced with a new gasket from Genos and didn't put as much muscle in it the 2nd time. No leaks, works like a champ.
 
Have mine sitting on my desk waiting to go in for the spring oil change,hope it works as good as everyone one says. Oo. Oo. Oo.
 
Friend had one and drove through a cornstalk field. Opened the valve. He mentioned something about a lock. It was on a car though.

I've always wondered about that. I like the idea of the valve, but it always looked like something more suited to city & highway driving. Out here on the ranch we're always driving through brush, weeds, etc. It's amazing where stuff ends up stuck under the truck. I always figured it might be just a bit too easy to dump all your oil and be stranded out in the middle of nowhere.

I just can't bring myself to trust a $10 valve to keep me (or some sick SOB walking past my truck) from trashing out a $6000 CTD.
