I don't really use my truck other than for driving around town (unloaded) and freeway (unloaded) and I have about 13,000 miles on it in last 1-1/2 yrs. The one time I towed with it, it definetely ran better after I unhooked trailer. I'm thinking of going to uhaul, getting a trailer and getting 1-1/2 or 2 tons of gravel dropped in (the trailer) and hauling that for awhile. Anybody know about how long or how far (or even how often) I should do this? I'm thinking of maybe running my EGT's to maybe 1100 or 1150 (kinda don't want to max out, even though I know 2004. 5+ trucks are supposed to be good for more)

And before anybody asks, I got the truck to haul my tools around and have somewhat of a fast vehicle that I can somewhat justify (not like a corvette that I couldn't afford anyway!):)

Get it hot and work it hard... . egt wise you are fine. If you get to like 1600 for 30 sec of so then you can be in trouble.

Geeze, this is a good question. I have always kept it below 1200*, and then only touching 1200* occasionally. Is it better for the injectors to run it up to 1200*+, and if so how often and for how long? BTW, I add Cummins Valvoline injector cleaner at every fill up.

1800egt, 3500rpm and 120mph for a few seconds seems to quiet my truck down. . make sure you cool things down real well after something crazy like that :)

How is your turbo still alive?

I have no freaking clue. . that's around 45-50psi of stock turbo boost too :)

:-laf :-laf :-laf

I've been doing 1400-1500egt's for a long time with the edge. . like 40,000 miles worth. . moved up to a new version of the hot juice and 1700 was seen a few times. . Now 1800 and more RPM's :) I'm sure things are "worked up to" to handle things. May be it's the Amsoil?

Tho, the one thing I've always done after a hot run it to drive slow for atleast 10 minutes and ensure the EGT's were down to 300 before I shutdown.

There really isn't many posts or threads about the stock turbos taking a puke. Those little boogers seem to be pretty tough.

JasonC. how long have you held those temps? I'm just curious. I have seen 1700, once, and my foot came up right quick.

Why rent the trailer? You can put 1-1/2 tons of gravel in the bed, although the suspension will sit on the overloads.

1 ton in the bed is a piece of cake.

I run unloaded 99. 9% of the time. Roughly 70/30 highway/city. I don't worry about it. Or, at least, I try not to worry about it.

Highway driving - loaded or unloaded - is good for it. I think you'll be just fine.

I hit 1600 on my stocker a few times for at least 15-20 sec... the first time I was a little nervous.....

i hit 2153* and 52 psi of boost when my turbine wheel exploded and shot peices of itself into my intercooler/out my exhaust/clean thru my air filter. it was a sight let me tell you. had a little too much to drink that night #@$%!

I couldn't honestly tell ya. When you are driving that fast, especially on the streets, the last thing you do is time how long you are at or above an EGT. :)

I suppose some math could work here. 90-120 the EGT's rise as quickly as I accelerate, So I"m at 1800 prolly between 117 and 120, few seconds? 3? 4?

When at hte drag stip, 0-100 in 13. 9 seconds and it was 1600-ish. The temps really rise above 100 and 3200rpm.

It's not long at 1800 by anymeans. If I level off the throttle and maintain 120, I'm sure hte EGT's will level out to 1600. . normally, I touch 120 and back down.

you can't do that! the the truck would get dirty, and you'd have to clean it up and and and... . :-laf

My last three trucks got 58mph in second up against the governor for about 10 miles or so. It always took the little ticking and clicking noises away. But running with a load will create more heat to burn things off. With a stock truck you should never have to worry about exhaust temps.

I have 3000 lbs crushed gravel, size 7/8 minus in sandbags.

Hauled for about 9000 miles of some around town but mostly cross country driving in my '07.

Fully loaded freeway mileage 65 mph went from 16. 5 mpg to 20. 5 mpg.

This summer the '06 gets same treatment.

Won't have heavy Toy Hauler 'til summer '09.

Figure sandbags will be good 'til then.

Have company rig 'til retirement this fall, then the 5. 9's will start getting some steady use.

Geez, I thought holding it there for 10 seconds was long enough. Should one of us tell him governed rpm is a shade over 3500 or will that scare him too much?

This seems crazy, but sag2 is a top-notch Dodge/Cummins tech. If he's willing to do this, then it must not be harmful.

[I'm not going to try it no matter how safe it is... it would scare the crap out of me! ]

Don't know if this is the right place to mention this or not but here goes. Since installing the Smarty I can't hit much over 1200* in the manifold no matter how hard I push it. SW#5 grossing 40K uphill won't go much over 1200*. I used to use that hill to clean things up with heat. Now I can't. Haven't decided if that's a good thing or not. I would like to heat it up once in a while but I'm cool with it for now.

My thoughts exactly. Then again, Sounds good to me. I will do this next week and see if my ticking goes away, cause man... do I have someticking laterly.

I drive 2 miles to work and literally it has taken 3 weeks to go through a tank or fuel. I am sure my injectors are pretty carboned up, I just was not sure how to uncarbon without removing.
