As with the ULSD the lubrication Oil has also been updated and you will find in the long run even if you find a supply of CI-4 it will be short term. CJ-4 and newer oils have been designed expressly for keeping our diesels running and keeping the soot in suspension. While it does turn black this is part of its design properties and nothing to worry about. I would suggest you install a bypass oil filter some claim to reduce the soot contamination as well as keep the oil looking clearer.
On the contrary, I have read that the Cj-4 oil has lost some of it's lubricating properties to reduce ash build up in the DPF on the new emission control trucks. I am looking for a good supply of CI-4 rated oil and praying it will still be available for a long time. I am running it now in my 6. 7.Thanks for all the input. I don't see soot suspension as a major problem any more since the EGR delete but I better understand what the CJ-4 is all about now. As far as lubricating properties are concerned, I assume they are both equal or the CJ-4 may be improved over the CI-4?

Have you had any troubles with the Unit since the romoval of the EGR? Other than codes. Did it help out fuel economy? Smoke a little more? Any info you can give would be great, I am thinking about doing it to mine this weekend.

Please explain, I don't know what UOAs are. There are quite a few of us with UOAs on CJ-4 Rotella that indicate otherwise...
No doubt you have been having excellent results. But consider that Rotella has only had the CJ 4 out for what, 4 or 5 months. At least that is when I first noticed it was CJ-4 around here. You may not see UOA change yet. As far as what I have been reading. There is a great article in the TDR if you are a member. Issue 57 and 58 extensively covers the analisys of all the different oils. CJ, CI and CI Plus. I for one have decided to stick with CI oil for as long as I can find it. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/Issues/IO58_LubeOilAnalysis_Compare.pdf
Just my 2 cents.
