After deleting the EGR+Cat+DPF I want to run the CI-4 oil again like I did in my 5. 9. Is there any reason for me not to run CJ oil ?

And how long should I run Dino before switching to synthetic?

Anyone... ?

Thanks,
Chris

My 2007 owner's manual claims to run CJ-4 oil in both the 5. 9 and 6. 7 to prevent some type of buildup which I would need to read again. My guess would be that CJ-4 oil will be the only type of oil available soon since it works on the older trucks as well. I think Mobil 1 now is only making CJ-4 oil after speaking with them at the SEMA show. It's like the incandescent light bulb which will no longer be sold in the near future since higher efficiency alternatives will work in standard sockets. It still amazes me that there are still people out there that want nothing to do with fuel injected cars and swear by carbs only. Man I sound like a tree hugger here that is not what I meant I was just using examples

I am sure with CJ-4 oils, as been proven with a lot of things, technology will catch up and make it better. Until I feel it has done that, I will stick with the CI-4 Amsoil in my 99. I am one that feels like it isn't up to government mandates to create cleaner, more fuel efficient vehicles.

As with the ULSD the lubrication Oil has also been updated and you will find in the long run even if you find a supply of CI-4 it will be short term. CJ-4 and newer oils have been designed expressly for keeping our diesels running and keeping the soot in suspension. While it does turn black this is part of its design properties and nothing to worry about. I would suggest you install a bypass oil filter some claim to reduce the soot contamination as well as keep the oil looking clearer.

Thanks for all the input. I don't see soot suspension as a major problem any more since the EGR delete but I better understand what the CJ-4 is all about now. As far as lubricating properties are concerned, I assume they are both equal or the CJ-4 may be improved over the CI-4?

On the contrary, I have read that the Cj-4 oil has lost some of it's lubricating properties to reduce ash build up in the DPF on the new emission control trucks. I am looking for a good supply of CI-4 rated oil and praying it will still be available for a long time. I am running it now in my 6. 7.

Have you had any troubles with the Unit since the romoval of the EGR? Other than codes. Did it help out fuel economy? Smoke a little more? Any info you can give would be great, I am thinking about doing it to mine this weekend.

Well, after installing the Edge with the MP-8 & the 5" +EGR Delete removing the cat & DPF... . I noticed a little smoke on start-up but less than I ever saw on my 99' 5. 9. I haven't really had a chance to open it up or tow yet but the 6. 7 goes from stop to 75 MPH insanely fast. When I have the MP-8 on 75% and the Edge set only on level 1, it feels like the whole body is lifting off the truck when I hit the throttle. .

I am insanely happy with the 6. 7 now. It shames anything my 5. 9 could do. I don't worry about the codes as the Edge clears them every time I start up.

What are you doing to your truck this weekend?

HEY, DieselLady !!!!

There are quite a few of us with UOAs on CJ-4 Rotella that indicate otherwise...

Please explain, I don't know what UOAs are.
For BruiserBob, I have seen an increase on the open road from 13 mpg to 16. 5-17. That is with EGR, PCV, CATs and DPF history. Around town has seen no improvement at all. Just filled it up this afternoon and got 9. 1mpg. But that has got to be from my serious case of impatience, and I live for the feeling of acceleration you get as it shifts each gear. Doesn't work well in day to day traffic.
Oh the bright side. I love the sound, even if it isn't as loud as my 99. I love the smell in the morning as it warms up in the garage now. Just a hint of diesel. And if I drive like a sane woman, I at least have the choice to use the fuel or not. Oh, and that 9. 1 was on the number 3 setting on the juice. :D

UOA = Used Oil Analysis

I'm one of the ones using Rotella CJ with excellent sample results. Have been using Rotella CJ for the last 150k to 200k miles.

No doubt you have been having excellent results. But consider that Rotella has only had the CJ 4 out for what, 4 or 5 months. At least that is when I first noticed it was CJ-4 around here. You may not see UOA change yet. As far as what I have been reading. There is a great article in the TDR if you are a member. Issue 57 and 58 extensively covers the analisys of all the different oils. CJ, CI and CI Plus. I for one have decided to stick with CI oil for as long as I can find it. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/Issues/IO58_LubeOilAnalysis_Compare.pdf
Just my 2 cents.

And you will find there is a lot of debate over the validity of those articles. Most agree they are useless since they only look at the additive package, which does not reflect on the oil's actual real world performance that a UOA provides. most of us running CJ-4 have had UOAs every bit as good as CI-4.

And CJ-4 Rotella has been out since summer 2006... I have been running it since Sept 2006.

Guess I started using CJ about the same time frame (fall 06), so that would mean I probably have about 220k miles on the CJ (374k total). Would still be using Rotella CI-4 if it was available, but the CJ is doing fine so far.
