sag2 I take it your a desiel mechanic. if not it appers you know alot from other posts you made. I not trying to say i shouldn't just put it in but im worried about the warranty on this new engine as it seems that there going to have alot of problems and i bought one. so im just worried about the warranty issues that could come from the dipstick showing over full or any other stupid thing there gonna try to get me on.

I don't think "they" try to get you just because they want to avoid warranty work. You have the owners manual that says 12 quarts, and you have receipts showing you purchased the oil. Most of us purchase three gallons, especially since the low ash is not available everywhere. I do not see how "they" could question anything, especially since Cummins engines generally never have oil related failures. I think it is safe to add three gallons with a filter change until a TSB says otherwise. I guarantee you the oil change guy at the dealer is dropping the oil and filter, and adding three gallons, just like they have for years. Does anyone have a receipt for an oil change showing "they" charged out less than 12 quarts?

I hear you on the sag2 I talked to four dealer in my area 3 said just put in what the dipstick says is ok and 1 said i don't care what the dipstick says put 12 in it. I also buy it by the gallon. I also called cummins on it and they feel my dipstick is wrong or as they said it needs to be recalibrated and told me to have the dodge dealer order a new one. The dealer I go to told me if I put an exhaust on my truck it voids the warranty. i know it doesn't they have to prove it caused the problem. I just don't like being hasseled.

This isn't the first time there has been an issue with the engine oil dipstick calibration... .

I remember this same discussion right after I got my 98. 5 24Valve. The book says 12 quarts and that is what I am doing no matter what the dip stick shows. The dip stick obviously isn't gonna change on its own so I would note the level on the dip stick after each oil change and use that as the reference. If it's not the same each time then you are either not draining all the oil out each time or not putting the same amount back in.

Well they had my truck for two weeks in the shop to try and figure out why it only takes 10 quarts and it has them stumped. They gave it back to me and told me to just run 10 quarts in it while Chrysler tries to figure out the problem. They have at least three other trucks built at the same time as mine (March 7,8) that have the same problem.

Here's what they checked:

- Engine level

- Pulled the pan from my truck and another and filled them with oil - came out the same.

- Compared dipsticks

- pulled dipstick tubes - same

- Checked the dipstick tube to see if it was somehow drawing oil up into it.

- Did a basic check to see if we were getting drain back from the oil cooler or the oil pump. I think this could be checked more in depth.

So when I find out from Chrysler what they found, I'll let you know. For everyone else that see's a discrepency on their oil level, mine is a full 2 inches above full with 12 quarts plus new filter.

any update on this issue, i am at 3K and getting ready to change it but am a little leary.

With the people that have had oil about the safe mark on the dipstick, has anything been damaged because of it?

MHLBR... ... ... Mine looked the same way on the first oil change, i checked it a couple times when i first got the truck and it was right where yours is at the top of the plastic on the dipstick.....

I went ahead and changed it and filled the filter and then poured the rest in the motor equaling a total of 12qts..... Now after checking mine after sitting all night my oil level is maybe an 1/8" below the top of the safe mark... So i called it good... .

MHLBR my dipstick read the same as yours. I talked to the dealer last week to see if DC had made any progress in finding out what the problem was and he said no. He told me to go ahead and fill it back up to 12 quarts and bring it back in and they would service it as a possible oil cooler drain back problem. Sounds like the dealer is trying to take care of me and take the matter into their own hands. Let us know what you find out also.

Got my rig back and still no resolution. DC wants to work the issue theirself on two motors they are tearing down. Meanwhile DC has instructed me to run 11 quarts total of oil in it.

Anyone else with this problem get any more info?

Keep us posted on this, PLEASE... .

I changed oil at 1900 miles after new and it was over full from the factory..... I changed the oil and put exaclty 12qts in (1 in filter, 11 in pan)... ... i am now at 3200 miles and last i checked my oil at 2800 miles the oil level was fine... . I just checked the oil today at 3200 and its overfull again... ..... (it does NOT smell like there's fuel in the oil)..... SO #@$%!

DC is still working it. My dealer says they took the engines from two other trucks that were having the same problem and are trying to figure it out. They would have taken mine if I didn't live in Alaska. Mine shows the over full condition after I let the motor set overnight. It will be over some right after I shut it off. Personally I believe it is a oil cooler drain back issue.

I did the 11 quart thing right away as i figure if ten is the lowest and 12 is way to high i would just split it in the middle. I can't get anydealer near me to see this as a problem

Add Me to the list

Taking my truck by the dealer this evening to let them look at it. My oil level is a quarter inch up on to the cable all the way above the plastic. When I called the service manager he said he had not heard about this?? I tokd him that I didn't think that I was the only one with this problem but there are very few 6. 7's around right now in this area. Is there anything new come up with this subject????? The trucks oil was just changed less than a thousand miles ago?

Just thought I would let you know what the dealer had to say. I tallked to the mechanic that looked at my truck he said he thought that I had an Injector leaking fuel into my oil, And that I needed to bring it back tomarrow

and leave it. I asked him if this was the first time he had this with a 6. 7 and he said it was. I told him that I thought this was happening more than he was aware of, so he checked another 6. 7 in the shop and it was a little over full, but nothing like mine. He also didin't think there was a need to send the oil off to make sure there was fuel in it?? So I guess will see what happens .

I have the same problem with my truck's oil level reading WAY abouve safe on the dipstick. The dealer told me to monitor it and they would put dye in if it continued to increase. Sounds like the same problem as you guys are having.

Another forum had a thread on this & the resolution was a dipstick replacement that seemed to solve the problem.

DC need to get their act together on this one. It is down right embarrassing.
