Trailer tires vs. LT Tires on Travel Trailer

I just picked up my new toy houler!!! It's a 42' Inferno made by kz. My 04 pulled it pretty good but I think I need to do some upgrades to my truck. ( five star converter/ billet input/ co-pilot/ turbo?/) Just curious if anyone has experience pulling somthing this log and heavy. If so, what kind of milage did you see. What were temps at? Any info is always appreciated!

Thats a whole bunch of trailer for a 2500:eek:. I have pulled 40 ft park models which are tag trailers and have been as low as 8mpg and as high as 10mpg running 60mph. Pulling a big 5er I have seen as high as 12 and as low as 8. Just depends on wind and terrain.

Speaking of, Id like to find a manageable toy hauler for my 1995 3500 duelly. Cant abide the thought of slide outs (structural nightmare) and Id prefer a fith wheel. Interior size and good construction outstrip the value of gee gaws in my book. Will we need to build one, or does something sensible exist?

thanks in advance gents.

I have a 33ft KZ toyhauler and fully loaded with bike, freshwater, and all our stuff we are at 21500lbs- the upper weight limit for my 01 3500. I'd be extremely careful with that rig. I'm sure it's nice and you're excited, but it's a bit big for a 3500, let alone a 2500. I just had a friend almost kill his family making this mistake. Trailer was 2 weeks old when he totaled it and his truck. Scared him so much that he replaced the truck with a Toyota Prius and vowed to wait a couple of years before attempting that again.

That being said, I pulled my rig the first year on stock power and wasn't happy. Barely kept up with traffic. Try a mild set of injectors and a Smarty. The Smarty (at least for my model year) even has a setting for towing-#3. I think that would be a great setup. I also wasn't happy with my stock shocks when the trailer was on. The Rancho 9000's are adjustable for different loads. I set them to max with the trailer on and the thing rides like a Caddy. Set them to middle level when empty and they ride much better than stock. Even my wife noticed a big difference.

Engine temps are pretty steady even in hot August weather. The cooling system is quite capable. Exhaust temps will vary wildly depending upon terrain, load, and your mods. I was running well above the speed limit in South Dakota and was at 1250*-the upper limit. Back down to speed limit and it was 900-1000. Not too bad. My setup seems to run a bit hot.

During that South Dakota speed run I got 8. 3 mpg and that was the worst I got on the whole trip from CT to SD and back. The best I got was 10. 5 while going through the Ohio, Indiana, Illinois area. Speed limits there are a bit less.

No matter what you do remember that the mods will help you pull your trailer better, but will enable you to get yourself into a ton (or about 10 tons) of trouble if you become complacent. A small bit of fear will always keep you in check and safe. Be careful and have a great time with it!

Wow thats way overloaded for a 2500,would be a struggle for a 3500. It may pull it sort of, but what about stopping it. In case of and accident will the insurance pay, what about liability if others are killed in an accident. No way I would be towing that with a 2500.

That trailer has almost 3000 pound pin weight, with a total GCVR of 18,000. I'm guessing that is not only beyond legal (don't want to get in an argument about that), but beyond safe. It's been hashed over 1000 times... the truck WILL pull it. The question is will it pull safely? No matter what you do to a 2500, that's what it is. You can put airbags, engine mods, and all the other goodies on it, but the trailer is too big for the truck. IMO, RV dealers should bear a lot more responsibility to match the trailer to the truck. When I was told my old truck would pull the trailer I was looking at, I said, "Yes, I know that. Will it pull it legally?" No answer. Please consider a bigger truck, like in the 3500/4500 dually range.

If he had an accident while drunk, the ins. would pay. If he had an accident while speeding, the ins. would pay. In every other conceivable circumstance, no matter how at fault he was, the insurance would have to pay.

What's so special about the weight that all of a sudden the insurance isn't gonna pay?

Look at New Horizons RV, custom Fifth Wheel, Travel Trailers, MotoMovers (toy haulers), and 5-Star RVs designed and built for you!. They do custom builds with a 5 star rating.

They are the only 5 star 5th wheel made and it is a great unit, just a little spendy. Before we ordered our AF I looked for a New Horizon 2 to 4 years old. The very few I found were also very spendy. There are no dealers for New Horizon, you order one from the factory in Junction City, Kansas and you pick it up at the factory. They claim they don't need dealers because they don't break, but if they do, you can take it anywhere you want and the manufacture will pay for the repair. By the way they install LT tires on every unit at the factory.

I have been asked where I get my information about 5th wheel and TT ratings. On December 06 I purchased the RV Consumer Group Guide which cost me $149. It's a little spendy, but I believe it is well worth the money if you're thinking about purchasing a new or used RV. Since we had decided to purchase a new or used 5er, I ordered the guide to help me make a good choice and with that information we did purchase an 08 Arctic Fox 27' 5er. The guide rates every 5th wheel and TT made at the present time and the last 10 years or so. There is also a 3 or 4 page report on every unit. This is the RV Dealer's bible that all dealers have. The dealer may disclose information from it if it is favorable to the unit that you are interested in. If the information is not favorable, they just say that they don't use the guide and that they don't believe in it. The guide, which consists of 4 CD disks includes, the ratings, Towing guide, How to outwit any auto, truck or RV dealer, RV walkabout inspection guide and two paperback books on how to negotiate the sale price. All of this information was of great help for me to decide which 5er to purchase. The tips on negotiating the final price were also very helpful. You will save far more money on the final price of your next RV than the cost of the guide. At a later time the folks at RV Consumer Group gave me the guide for Slide-In-Campers just for the asking. They also have a guide for MotorHomes. I have the CD's downloaded on my computer and at a moment notice I have furnished information to other TDR members. I can not forward any data by email since it is protected, but I can print it.

I have no connection with RV Consumer Group nor do I get any kick back from them. Their toll free # is 800-405-3325. Web site, -- email address removed --

Well that is just way to much trailer for a 2500 you need to go up to a 4500 or 5500 is probably more like it :rolleyes:

I own a 37ft raptor grosses out between 16000-18000 and that is about the maxium that I will go with a 2500 and some people will probably say that is to heavy :-{}:-{}:-{}:-{}:-{}

Thanks Grizzly for that info.

Off hand do you know when new issues are published?

Just wondering when I should order it.

I don't know when the new issues are published, but they do have reports on the 08 models. Give them a call and let us know.
