Due to a incompetent mechanic leaving my bolts loose on my harmonic balancer and somehow shearing off the dowel pin I was wondering if this work on my 03 so that I dont have to pull the crank out to fix this problem... .

Fluidampr Cummins 3500+ RPM Drill Pin Kit 300002

This part is listed under the 12 valve section of this website. . I really just need to know if the bolt pattern of the harmonic balancer is the same from a 12 valve to a CR???

That's the only drill pin kit I see listed for the cummins on the fluidampr site. I assume the pattern is the same but I didn't pin mine. Don't forget to get the belt routed around the damper before tightening it up.

I'd be interested to see if this works out for you. It would be good to know I'm not screwed if it happens to me.

I talked to Garret a pure diesel power and he said it should work. . So I think If I dont pull my engine out of the truck I am going to do it. .

I'd rather see grade 10 bolts in place of the pins. A pin can act in shear only, but a bolt holds the surfaces together by friction, and so is stronger.

The dowel pin in the end of the crankshaft on 2003-up engines indexes the “tone ring” for the crankshaft position sensor. The ring is sandwiched between the damper and the crank nose. If you carefully position the tone ring, the dowel pin is not necessary. Wile the bolt pattern for the 2003 damper is the same as the earlier ones, the spacing for the serpentine belt is about 0. 080” farther toward the engine on the 2003 compared to the 12-valves. I don't have a tone ring handy, but it probably is about that thickness, accounting for that . 080" difference being used in the damper.

The toner ring is what times the engine right???? So as long as the ring is placed where it needs to be the bolts should hold it?? If that is the case I prolly wont mess with it. . i thought that the dowel pin is what held everything right where it needs to be. . The bolts that holds the balancer and ring on dont really have alot of slack and they hold it pretty much in the center when I reinstalled it and it runs good too. . I prolly wont mess with it then... .

So WPeschel - did the fix work out for you?

Ryan

Well after so many pple telling me that I really dont need the dowel pin I decided not to waste my time... I was told that the dowel pin is just for knowing what position the toner ring and balencer need to be in... I have the truck pulled apart at this moment with injector problems but Don is fixin me right up... I should be back on the road again next week... Now I need a Smarty. .
