Seattle Times article

Truck is no longer a biodiesel virgin...

I don't know about the rest of the country, but here in NY, if you register over 8500lbs. you are automatically giving consent to random roadside checks and dipping. I didn't think you could dip because of the roll-over check valve in the fill neck. If I were to go red, I would get a filter can without the water drain. I've never had to drain water yet since 1994.

Red Dye

I've been thinking about this lately, as I have fuel tanks on my property for heating oil... garage, greenhouses, barn, etc. as well as a couple 550gal. skid tanks for my equipment. I recently purchased an FS2500 oil filter kit for my 95 CTD, I did this after watching the online video of the FS2500 removing black INK from clear mineral oil. I haven't installed it yet, so, I was thinking of adapting the FS2500 with a low volume; . 5 gpm, low pressure; 1-2 psi, transfer pump, and transfer fuel from one tank to another through the filter... hey if it removes black ink, why not red? Any thoughts... rebuttles are welcome. Ed3

With the price of fuel and the savings you show, it would take about 35 tank refills to cover the fine by DOT. The sooner you start the more you save.

I know someone who has run red starting in 1996 and to this day has saved alot more then the fine would cost :-laf

Also with all the talk about droping the fuel tax red would be ok to run.

Cliff

Dropping the fuel tax is unrealistic. I'm glad most people who voted in the Dem primary saw right thru Hillary.

1. How are we going to pay to keep the roads in drivable condition? Fuel tax does it nowdays.

2. Dropping the fuel tax wouldn't add up to much at $4 fuel prices, and would do nothing to prevent demand from rising.

Because ink and fuel dye are different things. You can't "remove" fuel dye from fuel simply thru filtration. Well, maybe you could, but I highly doubt you could afford the processor to do so. If it were that simple, someone would already be doing it. Azo dyes are much more soluble in fuel than black ink.

FWIW I think I read somewhere that there was a company that sells black dye to mask the red dye... . But then again I think I may have read that the dye is not only a color dye but may have other chemicals in it that they would test for if they dip you... . I'd really like to know what the REAL story is about the red dye...
Andrew

Masking the red dye will not do anything, as they don't do a visual color test. They do a chemistry-based test for the chemical's presence. I think it's similar to checking a pool for pH and proper chlorination. IOW, they do a titre, or they do a "tape test" like diabetics check blood sugar.

I have been running a long term test and the difference I've seen is..... nil.

OTOH my truck is a 12 valve, so it's multifuel anyway.

IMO right now the difference in price is not worth the risk. Here it's around a . 30 savings per gallon.....

Well boys i live in IN. They caught a farmer with off road fuel in pickup then they check his other 2 also had offroad fuel the fine was 10,000! If you have the money to pay a fine like that you can by regaler fuel. I had my 100gal tank checked by New Mexico at inspect station it was OK they did not check my truck tank

So those that cheat the system by not paying their fair share of fuel tax, but use the services that are provided by the taxes like roads. How can they justify this ?

I would guess they don't pay their fair share of state and federal taxes also!

my 2 sense

If you are that concerned about paying your fair share and not anymore than necessary are you as equally concerned about the millions out playing on any given weekend in this country who are burning road taxed fuel but recreating in roadless areas? Boats, ohvs. etc. Most all of these vehicles are being double taxed. First with an annual user fee and then again when they put (state and federal taxes) fuel into the tank. This has got to be a real windfall to the govt.

Yes, I to have used fuel taxed for hiway use offroad and in my boat, lawnmower etc. Government does get some monies it may not rightly be due. I didn't say this was a perfect system But it sure doesn't help having some out there trying to cheat. Doesn't help the rest of us, and if we all started doing this our costs would go up to pay for more enforcement

It's all unfair!

The unfair cost of diesel fuel is driving the fuel tax to an unfair amount.

Who wins either way? I know I don't win a d*m* thing.

What I found out, later, was that a lot of farmers have their red-dye diesel delivered to them, so the stuff at the pump sits in the tank and, for lack of a better word, rots. What I got was a tank full of crap.

I'll never do it again.

Actually, the off-road at the pump is used in reefer units... so it should be ok in most instances.
