broken Billet intermediate shaft.. what do you think?? also smarty problem!

ok. . so last saturday at left coast diesel's dyno day, i put my truck on the dyno with smarty (tnt) at level 7 with the Torque Management at 3, the Injection Timing at 2, the Rail pressure at 3, and the wastgate off. . the truck did not like the tune for some reason and only hit like 22 psi. . (402hp and 860 tq) so i take the truck off the dyno to see what is going on with it. . i put is on level 5 with the wastgate on (stock) and it was fine. . keep in mind i have never put it above level 5 intil today for the dyno, to be safe. . so then i put it to level 8 with the wastegate still on, but now with the boost fooler on. . to see if it was just the level 7 tune was bad. . and yes for some reason my truck would not run good on level 7. . so i was going to put my truck on the dyno one more time. . so everyone said it will be ok so i put the smarty to level 9 with the Torque Management at 4 (wild), the Injection Timing at 2, the Rail pressure at 4 (wild), the wastgate on (stock) but with the boost fooler on, and the Shift defuel set to off. . i drove it around on the street to see if it was a good tune. . WOW tons of power, so a was at a stop light a put the truck in 4wd and lanched the truck at about 22 psi. . and BOOM!!! and me sayin a F word alot. . and now find out i broke the Billet intermediate shaft clean into two parts. . what do you guy think and comments. . no BS please. .

thanks, chris

ps: keep in mind i have the stock turbo and Injectors. . so i am maybe at the most 450 to 470ish H. P.

on top of what you think of the shaft. . what do you think of my truck not running right on level 7. .

ps; i have ran the wastegate in the off setting on level 3 and 5 before and it was fine and it hit 46psi. .

As for the billet intermediate shaft breaking, I am not surprised in the least. We have been seeing them fail left and right lately. On the low power, it could have just been a poor selection for the dyno. Personally, I think level 2 on the timing may have hurt it some. With a little play time, I am sure you may have found some better settings

ya. . but still i have maybe 450 hp. . my truck is nothin special. . it have intake, exhaust, and a chip. . and everyone says the billit shafts are good for alot more power. . right???

also level 2 on the timing may hurt me on the dyno in what way, i am new to the diesel world in away. .

thanks, chris

I have a billet intermediate that will twist much more than the one in the pic. Those are strong, but brittle. Price is cheaper than those, call me at the shop and I'll explain more. 559-867-1111. I'll be gone most of the day wednesday. The builder of these shafts are claiming 120 degree twist and still keep its original memory. Richard P. S. Don't be too upset, intermediates break in two different stops and ways, towing or spooling. Spooling is sharp clean break on no major damage. Towing and everything in the main case is toast, input, TC, pump, planets, it can be a mess. Your on the lucky side believe it or not.

right now is going to be covered under warranty, but i am going to put it to the test in redding in two weeks. . so we will see. . but is it normal for a 450 hp truck to do this. . i have been told by many that the billet shafts are good for alot more power then i have. .

well when you are sitting spooling it will want to snap. It wouldn't have broken if you didn't built that much boost at the line. You build power and just sit there, there is 100% load.

I would agree that you had to much boost built on the launch.

You could of just had a bad level 7 tune. I have heard of it happening before, some trucks just don't like certain programs.

I ran a 431/791 2 weeks ago with Smarty Revo level 7, TQ on 2, timing and RP at default.

A friends 03 with level 7 TQ on 2, timing on 2, RP on 2 ran a 364.

Try using less boost at launch and your transmission will be a lot happier.

How much wheel hop did you get when you launched?

As far as the stock turbo and you only being at 450hp, this can actually make the problem worse. With enough fuel for 450hp, and the spool up of a stock turbo, the amount of torque you are going to make at a low (~1900) rpm is going to be very high. Not only the amount of torque but how fast the torque will rise. I am guessing, but your torque is probably more at 1900rpm, then mine is. Throw in some wheel hop, and something is going to break.

As others have said. Back the boost down on launch, and you will actually go faster, and break less parts. Put a big single turbo, or a big set of twins on, then go launch at 22psi.

for the wheel hop. . i did not get wheel hop at all. . , but what should a launch at (boost) at the drag strip. . ( in two week i am going to J&H event in redding,ca to drag race and sled pull. . )

At Redding ( I have a lot of passes there... ), I would start at 12psi, and work up 1psi at a time, until you get to about a 1. 74 60' time. It will probably work out to about 15psi. If you go to high on the launch psi, your 60' will start slowing down again. The Redding track will hold a 1. 74 60' on street tires all day long.
