I too would install the Borgenson shaft before another factory shaft. In fact, I plan to have the Borgenson shaft sitting in the garage in the next couple weeks, and maybe installed real soon. My truck is just about to go out of warranty, I figure rather than purchasing the extended drivetrain warranty to get more of the same junk factory parts, I will spend my money better going to quality aftermarket parts. It actually will probably be less expensive than the warranty itself.
I have already installed the steering box stabalizer. There was a noticable change for the better in the steering performance. No more constant pulling back and forth to the right when traveling in a straight line. That does suggest the steering box is flexing inapropriately.
After reading everyone's posts some time ago about the steering box problems, I figured the stabalizer would be a good preventative choice. And those who had to invest in new steering boxes also added the box stabalizer.
Shaft failure goes to safety when driving. I am very suprised this has not been a recall item since so many have had issues. Some have reported a broken shaft very early on in mileage, and have had to have their vehicle towed to dealerships for warranty repair. Fortunately those whose shaft broke were not driving at high speeds, most happened when already stopped. I cannot see taking the risk of the failure at highway speeds.
It certainly IS a sorry state of affairs when you pay the big bucks for a truck like ours and get such low performance out of such expensive important parts. The whole front end is of a very low standard design.
