Anyone ever have the fuel rail pressure sensor fail? It sits right on the top of the rail. Mine failed and the Cummins wouldn't run or idle. On some engine diagnostic software that I run it showed as a possible low voltage on an injector. Had the sensor replaced and all is fine. I just never heard of one going bad... .

I have seen post of them failing before, most though were in conjunction with adding a Rail Pressure Gauge that connects directly to the sensor. But a few were posts of just sensor failure.

Help!

By coincidence mine just failed on my 06 dually with 34,500 miles. The CHECK ENGINE light came on 2 weeks ago, code P0145 and dealer said it was a fuel problem... but nothing specific. They reset it, 2 days later it is on again, dealer calls DC and DC says replace this Fuel Pressure Valve. It is set to go in Monday, and tonight coming home from work it idled rough but ran OK, gauges OK, no smoke, all is normal. Smelled diesel, pulled into my garage and left idling while I looked at engine. Everything OK but strong smell of fuel. Looked underneath and BAM... heavy mist and drops of black coming out of my draft tube! SHUT OFF ENGINE. I checked dipstick, it was 3 times past the normal point. The BAD VALVE MUST HAVE SHUT, NO EXCESS FUEL GOING TO TANK, and all excess fuel SOMEHOW ENTERED MY CRANKCASE. HOW? By the way I had just filled up fuel 2 days ago, and fuel gauge usually stays on F until 80-100 miles. NOW IT HAS 67 miles since fill up and tank is just above 3/4!

Yes, it will be towed to dealer. HOW DID ALL THIS FUEL GET INTO CRANKCASE?

Sarge, how did you determine that it was the rail pressure sensor that needed to be replaced? Also what was the price and part#? Thanks!

Injector let go and washed the cylinder wall. Pull the batt cables so the dummies don't start it.

FYI - The whole rail, which includes the COV and Pressure Sensor costs $320 at the Cummins dealer... considerably less than the $480 listed for the COV alone. If the pressure switch is priced anything like the COV, you may be better off purchasing the whole rail assy at $320...

The fellow at the parts counter was blown away. .

FYI - Mark

I LOST A RAIL PRESSURE SENSOR RIGHT AFTER INSTALLING THE QUADZILLA RAIL PRESSURE GUAGE, RP SENSOR 200. 00 FROM CUMMINS IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN I WILL PARK MY 37s RIGHT ON TOP OF THE QUAD GUAGE AND TAKE THAT COMPANY OFF OF THE TO BUY FROM LIST... .

FWIW, shortly after getting my 05, I got a code P 191 which is Fuel pressure sensor performance.

While the truck had no performance issues, the dealer did replace the sensor and said that DC was aware of this prob and supposidly working on a fixit.

Not holding my breath for it to come.

Update

Dealer called and said that 4 of the 6 injectors are leaking but that ALL 6 will be replaced due to excessive fuel pressure, along with all 6 fuel pressure lines that were also leaking. This all due to a previously diagnosed fuel pressure limiter failure which is also being replaced. They put a dye into the fuel filter and then watch everything with a black light to detect fuel leaks. I said thanks but to make sure that the CP3 internal seal did not fail. Stay tuned
