I have some questions. My vacume pump has had a small leak for quite some time now. Now it has a serious oil leak. Last week I had the bright ideal of teaching my oldest son to drive. Didn't work out so well for my truck or my house. Anyways after this I noticed that the oil leak was much worse. I Took it to the car wash today and cleaned it up pretty good, drove it for a short distance, but could not see a definate leak other than the vacume pump leak. I was wondering how big of a pain it is to replace this seal I have read about. I did a search on vacume pump oil leaks but didn't find much information. Any help would be greatly appricated:confused:

:D Also I almost forgot my truck is also making a strang whistling whining noise. I thought it was my water pump. I have replaced it and still have the noise. Whille I was putting the pump on I checked all the other pullies and berrings, they all felt fine. It sounds lick an extra turbo whine but it also seems to be working fine. I was wondering if it could be a hole in one of the intercooler boots or lines

The oil leak you speak of is actually where the power steering pump shaft goes into the back of the vacuum pump. Go to this link FIXINRAMS.COM and you will find a repair kit with a new and much improved seal and the instructions you will need. It is easier to remove the power steering pump and vacuum pump as a unit.

As for the whine, does it happen all the time? When?

The whine is most prominent when I first start it up, hot or cold it don't matter. Seems worse when cold. But you can pick it off even when driving in town. lets just 25 to 30 mph in 3 rd gear when you let off the accelerator. I hope this helps.....

Either the belt tensioner or the idler pulley bearings. If you can hear it with truck stationary, remove the belt and see if that's not it. Also a stethascope might help you isolate the noise. bg

Could be power steering pump. Try turning the steering wheel while sitting sit, engine at idle. If whine changes pitch it is probably steering pump, maybe low on fluid or fluid needs changed?

Godspeed,
Trent

I will try taking the belt off to see what happens. As for the power steering pump it has never gave me a moments trouble and it is full of fluid. I forgot to mention that it sounds similar to the turbo whine, but different. I was told by a trucker that it could a boot on the intercooler that has failed and is comming apart inside said he has seen this before. As for the oil leak I guess I'll have to put her out of commmission. till I can get the leak fixed... ... ...

Is the Geno's kit the same as the fixinrams and does it have the DVD? The fixinrams kit also gives you extra seals.

Harbor freight has a cheap stethascope to help sort out where the sound is coming from on a running engine. Just be careful! :)

Is this your site, Trent? The truck on there looks like it could be the blacksheep:)

I have the vacuum pump oil leak on my "to do" list also. Since I haven't done it yet, I can't tell you much about it. However, it looks pretty easy and everything I've read says that following the directions, the average shadetree can do the whole job on a Saturday and still be finished in time for a cold beverage before supper time.

I did the vaccum pump fix, it's an afternoon project. The biggest pain is just getting at the bolts and then getting it all back in. It's buried in there pretty good. I used the fixinrams kit. Good kit. However, I was under my truck the other day and noticed a drip coming from the vacuum pump again. . grrr!

My vacuum pump had to be rebuilt after only about 60K. I left it at the South Point Dodge when I went on vacation years ago thinking it was a warranty fix. The dealer tried to sell me a new pump for over $2000. I called my regular shop Andre's Automotive in Bastrop and they told me about the simple rebuild seal kit. I think I made the dealer feel like a crook so they fixed the pump for the same price my other shop would have charged. I think I spent $200 to get it rebuilt. I've put another 110k on the rebuilt pump with no problems.

The Fixinrams.com and Geno's kits both come with the dual lipped Cummins seal instead of the single lipped OEM seal that will usually end up leaking.

A leaking PS pump seal was one of only 2 warranty issues on my '02 - the other was a towing mirror that kept drifting out of adjustment.

The repair of the PS seal only took the dealership about an hour to replace, and they stated that the replacement seal was the double-lipped seal that was much improved.

No more problems so far.

Well I believe I found the strange whining noise. The lower intake manifold heater gasket was blown out in a small spot. I hope that this fixes it. NOW on to the problem at hand I was in the process of resealing my vacuum pump. I have done a search on here to see what I could find, I found the part #s for the double lipped seal and the o-ring. The first problem is that the o-ring is way to small. . The second is that I was working on getting the seal out, that is where I am at right now. I didn't realize that the seal came out the backside so I beat it out with a screwdriver and tore the housing all to hell . So how do you get the housing apart to put the seal in. Please help my truck is now undriveable

WyomingCowboy, nope not my truck or my site.

WBodine,
The fixinram's kit comes with the correct size pvc pipe to drive the seal out. Also has the video to show you how to do it. I believe the part you are talking about drives apart with pvc pipe in the right place. Hate it you are having trouble.

Trent

Also, there are two types of vacuum pumps, and I can only assume you must have gotten the seals for the wrong one...

I was very impressed with the kit from fixinrams, the video was a plus, but the fact that he sends spare seals in case you mess them up makes it worth the extra price to pay. I am sorry to hear you are stuck in the middle of your repair; good luck.

Well I talked to the man at fixnrams and got the kit and the part that holds the seal and o-ring. Sounds like good people really helpful
