Competition Drag question

I'm glad this got posted! You can bet yer C-rations that these clowns plan to push this new administration hard to outlaw every conceiveable passtime in the name of the environment.

These radical eco nuts can't be talked to or reasoned with and sure as heck don't try and make a compromise with them. We've learned that the hard way.

As much as the environmental nuts annoy me, I admit they're a "necessary evil". Having a clean environment is worthwhile, and I suppose we need people at both extremes (environmentalists and anti-environmentalists) in the hope that we will end up traveling a nice road right between the two groups that's not painful for anyone.

However, the problem with the environmentalist wackos - who are almost certainly the minority opinion - is that they have very loud voices and tons of money. So much so that they seem to be able to exercise undue influence on our government.

I've heard it said that the whole purpose of environmentalism is to control every aspect of your life. And I believe it.

And, of course, there's boatloads of money to be made from it.

Noise is not an issue on the modern 4 cycle machines

Your statement is not totally correct. Closed course machines - MX bikes/quads - can be very loud right off the showroom floor. Not a huge problem for a MX track but it is a problem when those bikes are taken to the forest or ridden on private property - noise does not obey property lines.

Then you have the jackasses that believe loud exhaust = more power &/or faster rider. Loud pipes are annoying on the street and on the dirt - yes, I ride both street & dirt.

Brian

Yes I agree they can be loud especially the ones with the competiton exhausts. What i was refering to was that the newer ones are fairly quiet, especially the utility models such as my Polaris Sportsman, which are the ones that are predominantly ridden on trails, at least in my area

Give me a 250R with an FMF pipe! Twin pipes for my sled, stacks for my dodge and open headers on my big block, don't forget the beautiful soud and smell of a chainsaw cutting. Point being we have a lot of remote wilderness, you just have to get back to it to enjoy it. Don't expect to find serenity only 20 miles from town. The woods is my playground, and the nieghbors don't mind.

I love to ride ATV's and motorcycles, but I hate having to deal with people who consider themselves outdoorsmen and use a quad as a crutch to walking. Nothing like having some overweight rider with a dog box on a quad ride by me and my dogs to hunt an area I just spent five or six miles walking across a roadless area to get to. I quarter my elk and pack them out on my back. Why should someone need an ATV to do the same? I'm all for riding ATV's but some people use it as an entitlement to spoil the adventures of those who are willing to work a little harder to get there. Everything has its time and place... . seems like the two extremes on this issue already have enough advocates. I'll just stick to ethical and respectful/responsible ridership.

I agree completely. One of the things I like about being up in BC is that we have some shared areas where ATVs are allowed for hunting, but we also have a lot of areas where they are not allowed for hunting use with serious fines for anyone caught hunting off of one or packing game out on one. It seems to be working well and satisfying both types of hunters. I was brought up that you walk the bush and you read the bush, but like you say, some people just like to sit in the easier chair and see what they can happen across.

I don't have a problem using quads as a hunting tool, but only if you stay on existing, approved roads. Riding across open country is part of the reason we're having a hard time keeping areas open.

"Existing roads" becomes the issue. Being from Reno I know you are aware how little it takes to create a two track in the high desert sagebrush from one or two trips through virgin country. Subsequent riders come across these trails and unknowingly use the path and it suddenly is one more road through the backcountry that was never approved, but becomes a routine path of travel in what was once roadless area. As a man who spends a significant amount of time hunting in northern Nevada, Eastern Oregon, and Idaho I am more and more confronted with ATV users in these areas who are oblivious to their impact on the environment and the quality of the hunting experience for those around them. Most riders are good people but posses that attitude that if it isn't against the rules why worry about riding off road to get a little closer to that honey hole for fishing or hunting opportunity.

I agree, that's why I also said "approved" roads. Of course the BLM and FS are up to their eyeballs trying to designate roads. They can't keep up, and when they do close off roads, there are always the morons who go around or move the blockages. Even people who ride bicycles have no idea how much damage they cause. With the advent of the extreme downhill bikers, you see a lot of resource damage straight down the fall line.

This thread is just another example of the lack of respect many people have for each other and their environment. I dont think we need any more laws or policing of lands and its use. I do think we need better education and awareness programs to help everyone get closer to the same page and be able to enjoy this country in a free but responsible manner.
I ride dirtbikes and horses and I do what I can to be respectful on either. I also council others when I can on how to respond to the other as most folks dont know any better. The same goes for my truck. It is both my DD and my toy for the drag strip, but I dont race on the street or blast my radio at the track. I also keep mufflers on all my machines and they sound damn good. :)
I dont think anyone should be telling us how to use our own land but we should also know better than to ruin it.

Thanks for the last few posts. This simply reinforces my opinion that the vast majority of riders and ATV users are responsible stewards of the land who are respectfull of fellow outdorsmen. As with everything, it is a few rotten apples that ruin the reasonable outdoor pursuits we all enjoy.

I prefer the sign on the Kennedy compound in Florida... ... "Tresspassers will be violated"!!:eek::D:-laf

thats what i have written on my lockers at work, i think im going to be an a-hole and go fire up my two stroke thrill craft and ride wheelies up and down the pavement:-laf

Who are you guys kidding :eek:The 12 valves And the 24 valve Not only make a bunch of noise but most Can smoke out entire block And intersections

There are many people on this form ,Matter of fact I know people on this thread that thinks it's a big joke To be able to smoke out Whoever and whenever :-laf:I have no problem with the EPA Shutting down Our diesels for smog tests ,This was long overdue ,so don't cry about the environment When most of you pollute it purposely #@$%!

I know people that put the huge a%! injectors Just for the smoke WOW affect #@$%!So instead of us killing the environment Maybe we should be thinking about saving our environment For the future generations ;)

I personally know A lot of people Take there 4X4 trucks off roading into never never land meaning trial blazing , Physically tearing up The environment #@$%!. I can't blame The BLM For shutting down most of our open areas for this reason ,Unfortunately there's a lot a Bone heads That don't have any respect for anyone else but themselves :-laf

Our trucks make a bigger footprint then the motorcycles And the quads put together :-laf

Just my opinion :D

The thread was about "thrill craft" not smokey 12 valves... .

Thrillcraft are machines used primarily for recreation. Examples of thrillcraft includes snowmobiles, jet skis, four wheelers, dune buggies, swamp buggies, and dirt bikes. When machines are used for “thrill seeking” they are, by our definition, a thrillcraft.

Thrillcraft are generally designed for use off of traditional routes and roads and/or for high speed. Many owners of thrillcraft enjoy challenging themselves by “attacking” the land or water, seeking out steep slopes or rough pathways through the woods.

Remember folks, the hypocrits who want to "save what's left" were'nt saying that as they bulldozed mother nature for their piece of paradise!
