Do I need to be concerned about the killer dowl pin on my early 02 engine. I see BD has the cure for it on their website so thought I had better ask.:confused::confused:

Allegedly KDP was taken care of in the 1999-2000 vintage of truck, I have heard of them taking out a couple of early 2001 model year trucks. Other will beable to chime in with more info than me.

I have a 2001. 5 and have not done anything for the killer dowl on mine and have not had an occasion to have the front cover off to check it. They (DC) said it was taken care of and I will deal with them if it breaks.

Here's an '02 with a KDP failure. Dont assume anything! A $1 tab would have prevented this and I personally tried to get him to LET me check it out before this happened.

I can get the casting number. But I have seen at least 1- '02 from every plant with this issue. It was simply a case of Chysler using an old cover. Mine also had the old cover and I had tabbed mine years ago. The build dates were over 9 months apart BTW. I know the engines could have been all built at once, but it's not as likely.

Dave

I certainly appreciate the replies but short of tearing the cover off is there anyway to know for sure what lies beneath.

thanks Dave

By the time you have taken to drill, inspect, tap and fill the hole you could have taken the cover off and checked.

Someone please, what are the screws that can come loose and have the same effect as a KDP? I know of one who opened the cover on an 02 and these screws were loose.

Just take off he front cover, replace the front seal and use permatex #2 or RTV UltraBlack.

Check all the front cover bolt while you are in there.

How can you tell an old cover from a new cover ???

Why is the new cover OK... . What changed ?

And , Any Mexico Engines affected???

I know, lot's of questions, But , owning an 02 , I find it hard
to do the KDP for a remote " 1 of many good " problem.

Why is the new cover OK... . What changed ? The new covers have a casting feature that prevents the pin from backing out.

And , Any Mexico Engines affected??? Who knows, the covers look the same on the outside.

My truck is an 01. 5 and I haven't taken the time to do as Dave suggests, yet, my plan is the next time I have the radiator out for cleaning to do it then. Honestly, I'm more concerned about the bolts in the front cover coming loose and causing the same damage as a KDP.

The old cover is flat over the pin.

The new style cover is raised and has a grind out in the back to fit the pin, and the front is smaller.

Cummins has a tab that will cover the kdp for a couple bucks.

Make sure to check the book for torque spec's on the bolts, i think most are around 18 INCH POUNDS not foot pounds, i found out the hard way on the oil pump, Busted off a tab at 18 ft lbs. $200 mistake... .....

Is there a way to tell what cover you have from looking from the outside (ie cover on the truck)? Or do you have to take the cover off to check to see which cover you have? Is there a way to tell from engine serial number maybe?

Any Pics of a "newer" cover on a truck to compare to what I have?

Thanks

J-

Not that i am aware of, and i don't think the serial # on the engine matters, (maybe somebody who knows for sure will chime in) pick a good time and pull the front cover off and check everything in there you can think of.
I spent a few hours and if not for breaking the ear off the oil pump, it would have been done... ... . It took a trip to the local cummins shop the next day before i could button it up, but in my spare down time i did manage to upgrade/replace the injectors. :-laf

I have not been able to identify them externally. Maybe there is a difference or a series of serial numbers, but no pattern yet that I have seen.

Have had several 2000 up trucks with this, so I know it's real and it's much more common than is played out on the internet.

I figure $50 worth of new seal, UltrBlack and a $1 tab is worth the thousands the dealer would charge to fix it.

Before I dig out he shop manuals and such, what all is involved in R/R the front cover? What other stuff needs to be removed to get to it? Radiator? Fan? Pulleys? Balancer?

Trying to figure if it is a 2 hour job or a weekend job to check this out.

Thanks

Less than 3 hours. The fan gete removed without disturbing the radiator. tehn it's all nuts, bolts and a seal.
