Greg, why are you greasing the bearings? I usually just put a film on them and let the gear oil lube them.

PToombs, I reckon I am a little paranoid about nekkid bearings after an axle cleanout. Reckon I could just soak'em with gear oil before they get reinstalled? It just gives me the hebejebies:-laf to just slap it back together again, (man I got that shiver again, jes thinking about it:-laf). I know they run in oil, if everything is topped off. Just gettin the rear hub bearings adequately lubricated at startup? GregH

Dave I forgot about that one! Great song! :-laf

Greg, I usually put a thin film of grease on the bearing rollers and race and stuff them in. I also make sure the diff is full right up to the hole before I wind 'er up and take off. I've never had a problem in all my years of doing this. ;)

There is, however, a 1st time for everything. :-laf

Do what you're comfortable with, and enjoy the truck! :D

It's an CW McCall song, called "Classified". The lyrics are a hoot for anyone who likes old iron. I couldn't find him doing it on Youtube, but here is what I found.

Got all the loose ends tied up, yesterday and the truck back on the road. Did a little spin, down through town, to return excess materials to the auto parts stores. Got about $21. 00 back;). The brakes work great. GregH

You put the bigger wheel cylinders in? I am impressed with difference in braking effort in the 98.

Yes we did. The CarQuest units you gave me with the truck. And the braking effort is noticeably less! I used the Carquest , "blue" grade shoes. Those were also the shoes that were installed before.

I got to be careful so I dont lock 'er up when I brake at an intersection. GregH

Drove over to the shop, this morning. Used the truck. I went the long way around to stop by the P. O. . This route takes me down a 3 mile, 10% + grade. I did not have to tap the brakes often to hold the speed limit (30 MPH). Any brake engagement was very smooth and quite effective. Before the upgrade, there was noticeably more brake useage in longer intervals to keep the truck at the desired speed.

As a check on the tierod that was built and installed recently, I took the wrenches to the lock nuts to see if they had worked loose. They were still tight, however, I could turn the entire tierod with some effort. I will dissassemble the tierod and double nut both tierod ends as an extra precaution. Just some feedback and hopefully heads up on this method. GregH
