Stainless exhaust tip ??

My Stainless exhaust tip turns a not so attractive shade of brown, I polish it back, same thing happens after a few hundred miles, any ideas how to avoid this ?, I may just paint it gray and forget the thing is there.

I'm assuming that it is a good quality stainless, so I would assume that what you are using to polish it is turning colors due to the heat. Try using plain old Windex glass cleaner on it an see if the discoloration continues.

It is from the heat, the tip is high quality, I have been using mag wheel polish, no wax, I think Motorcycle people have the same issue.

What's the point of having SS exhaust tip in the first place. Does it make the truck run better? Do you get get better fuel mileage? Then why have it?

Grizzly, I get at least 5% increase in MPG with my stainless steel tip!! :-laf:-laf



Actually, the tip extends the OEM exhaust by about 8"... just enough from having to always clean up the soot from the right side of my SS bumper, which is why I put the tip on.



My SS tip is also dirty/brown, BUT I have never tried to clean or polish it.

I have 5-1/2" polished 304SS tip(s) and the brown is from road grime baking onto the pipe. I use a spray wax to help stop it from sticking in the first place and it eases cleaning.

I would go with D Creed's explanation. No way can you have that much heat at the tailpipe, unless you had an early 6. 4 with the flamethrower option.

If it bugs you that bad just clean it regularly but if not, well then just forget about it until you wash it. My turn downs like to collect the road grime during the winter and there's really not much you can do about it.



They also seem to collect soot on the front lip of the pipe instead of uniformly coating it... still trying to figure that one out.

I have one for the same reason as C. Fish. Got tired of cleaning black soot off the rear quarter and bumper every time I washed the truck. The front portion of the tip is impossible to keep clean even with a mudflap in front of it. The rear of it stays shiny and that is what everyone sees when I pass them... Oo.



I also have the excessive black soot on the inside, can't seem to keep that clean either???? Must be my driving.

OK, I should comment here, the tail tip is a turn down, it extends 6" out to avoid the Rock Taimers I use when towing, and the Wife doesn't like the exhaust blowing at her when she is standing there with the engine running, the polished stainless is all they come in, it really looks like crap with a dirty brown color, and yes it gets hot, go pull a 7% grade with 22000 total gross, and stop at the top and touch the tail pipe, they get hot, the Cat is the problem, I plan on just sanding it with fine sand paper to look like a regular tail pipe, problem solved.

Seafish... . you only get a 5% increase with a ss tip. Try having it dynoed in reverse on a day with the ambiet air temp below 36. 6 deg and the wind out of the sw at 10 knots. The results are amazing. I got 15% and am thinking of going to dual exhaust for 30% increase.....

To answer you question staight up, it is the heat of the exhaust doing it, if you do not want ot to occur then buy a double wall extension, a lot of companies sell them. Banks ,xtreme diesel ect: expect to pay $100+ for a shinny hinny

Although you already have the SS tip, the chrome tips from Geno's hold up extremely well and don't turn colors except for dirt. I believe they even recommend the chrome over the SS on the 6. 7L because of the color change due to heat.

I've had mine since the truck had about 5k on it... I'm at almost 200k currently and, aside from being dirty, its still looks like new. I run run to keep the rear quarter panel clean... even with the factory exhaust, they soot the rear quarter.
