Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) P Code 1682

I was driving home tonight and my "check gauges" light came on and my volt meter dropped to 8 or all the way left. I stopped and checked the codes and got a P Code 1682. I looked it up at home and it says Charging System Too Low. I looked it up but the other person was having transmission problems as well, which I am not having. Has anyone had this and was it the Alternator or regulator or was it something else. Thank you for your help in advance.

Sometimes when the alternator brushes are going out there is a lot of electrical noise generated and this will affect the transmission operation. Kits are available for rebuilding the alternator for around $35-$40 bucks. Clean and check the battery and electrical connections as we head into colder weather as this is when your electrical loads are highest.

Thank you for this info! I am fighting bad transmission problems (all shifting issues) and it is sounding more and more like alternator "noise". Is there any kind of noise filter kits/mods available for the alternator? This seems to be a real problem for the trucks equipped with an auto trans. Thank you.

I know DTT has the noise filter as I've had one on mine going on 6 years now, I'm thinking BD also offers one too.

Well i replaced the alternator and cleared the codes and havent had a problem since. Thanks for your replies. I appreciate it.

I had the same thing go wrong. When you change the alternator, make sure you plug the small cable back in , other wise the new alternator won't work any better than the old one. I had put in the DTT noise filter in two years ago, along with shielding the ground wire. Works real well
