Smarty doesn't change shift points

I am not 100% sure on the Smarty jr, but 50hp injectors are on the smaller side and shouldnt effect your timing to much.

People have good results with 50hp injectors and the JR. They are on my wish list. You can retard the timing a little if you like with the revo options.

Ok, just trying to learn here, but why would you want to retard the timing with 50hp injectors? They are on my wish list also.

I don't why you would retard your timing... ..... but I do know that if your rig has less than 20k miles on it you can send your stock tips to DDP and they will hone them for $50 each.

Because the "larger" injectors will inject more fuel sooner into your combustion chamber which is essentially like advancing the timing. Therefore, if you use the default Smarty timing, it could be too advanced. You can leave the Smarty timing stock or use the aftermarket injector setting with the Smarty Sr.

With aftermarket injectors, you are going to be much happier with the Smarty Sr. IMO.

On the Jr they added the revo options to help control smoke. Some people like me don't want any smoke others don't mind. If you increase the torque management you get less smoke. If you advance the timing more you get more smoke. I guess the trucks are all a little different too just like the drivers. I have read that 50hp injectors are just fine with the JR but larger ones are not. As for the timing it is up to you, advance it some or retard it some or leave it alone. Too much timing is bad too, high cylinder pressure. That is what is nice about the smarty products they have good settings to start with and you can fine tune from there depending on your preference. I would like to get a set of injectors and run on economy. That way I get better fuel economy from timing and better injectors. Right now I run on tow or perf with the POD turned down a little. I am torn becoause more power is addicting but I plan on keeping this truck a while yet and power adds heat to transmission and diffs. I spoke to one fellow who had transmission and rear end trouble. He could see 1300F and 42psi I believe. He conducted good maintenance and used good fluid too. I don't want that. Towing on tow now I can only get to 1100F. Before the 351, ATS, and 4"exhaust I would see 1200F. Always something to think about.

The OP originally asked about the Smarty Jr changing shift points. That answer is no but I can attest to this. Mine is a '03. 5 with the 48RE and I was very disappointed with the shifting. Particularly with the 3 to OD/converter lock-up sequence. The transmission seemed very indecisive. I installed a VA C3. 1 and the shifts improved. I then moved up to the Smarty Jr and am now very happy with my shifts. Why is that when in 03. 5 trucks the transmission PCM was a standalone? I've posted this question with no replys so my only conclusion is the the Smarty Jr moved the power band enough to make the PCM more decisive in it's shift logic. Chime in if I am out to lunch but my 48RE shifts 100% better with the Smarty Jr installed. BTW, I uploaded the Tow program and have not looked back. The truck pulls it's GCW of 17,080 up grades like nobodies business and the EGTs are well under control. For what it is worth, my. 02

What I have noticed with my Smarty S06 set on SW1 with the TQ=2 is that I no longer have to floor my accelerator pedal from a stoplight to get the truck and 5er moving off the line. Seems like it will start moving at much less throttle and RPM input. Before Smarty I had to floor it and wait for the engine rpms to climb past 2000 before the rig wanted to start moving from a stoplight. That was super annoying for me...

I would also tend to agree that my shifts are improved especially going into OD, but I didn't really consider this until your post.

Another thing I noticed was that when my truck was stock and I towed over Mt. Hood (start at 300ft elevation and then climb to 4000+ ft twice, I really had to plant my right foot to the floor, so much so, that I think the firewall has a permament footprint in it. The truck was a DOG towing 11K up big grades.

With my mods, I just push the OD out button and climb any grade with very little effort. It is so much more enjoyable. I'm not talking about speeding, just enjoying a nice leisurly climb up a BIG grade.

The same is true on grades with lots of switchbacks that limit your speed to 20-30 mph. Before the trans and engine didn't really work well together and it shifted back and forth between gears and just drove me crazy... Now it just loafs up BIG grades with switchbacks with no problem. Its just much more enjoyable. I hope that makes sense to people that tow.

I love the Smarty... TONS of usable power, low (relatively speaking) EGTs and no smoke or haze.

Hope this helps,

Louis
