Can't take it anymore, after an oil change all is well but after about 1,000 miles it starts to stink again, after about 3,000 miles I can't stand it, and I change the oil!!! I'm using Rotella T Synthetic and Regular Rotella, doesn't seem to matter both STINK, and I can smell it sitting in traffic, park truck and walking around it!!!, really smells like B. O. !!!, I have never had this problem with my 99' using the same brand of oil. HELP!!!!

hey, FourBarR, I noticed you have a 98. 5, I posted as well that my 99' with the same oil doesn't have this problem, I guess my question is "what is causing this" is there a different brand of oil that is better for my 07', is there something on this motor causing this that I can rip off(upgrade/change) sorry EPA! don't care!

are you using rotella cj or ci ? I am still using the old ci formula ,dont know if the new cj which is for the new trucks is any different as far as smell is concerned.

Use a different oil.

I don't call it Rosmella for nuttin. It may be a good oil but I can't stand the smell either. Even drained the oil after a couple weeks cause I couldn't get away from it.

FourBarR, I've used regular Rotella and Synthetic both have the "CJ-4" rating and below, from wally world(wal-mart)

If a different brand of oil will get me away from this stinking issue, I'd like to here from others what they would recommend for my 2007?

If you haven't already, do a search on the matter, been covered plenty of times on here.

RTrenary,

I say it isn't the oil because all oils have a smell... . and since the smell seems to be somewhat unique to your truck - it sounds like there is something going on with your particular truck that is causing the smell to penetrate the cab. Rotella is a very popular brand - and thus it stands to reason that a third to one half of the members on this site would likely chime in and tell you the smell is normal... if it were normal for Rotella users.

On my '01 people would have said to check the blow-by tube..... without looking at your truck - I can't comment on what the issue could be.

I do hope you resolve it though! Bad smells are annoying!

Well just to see what happens, I'm going to use Mobil Delvac 15w-40, I already use the Fleetguard Stratapore Filters, I hope someone out their has encountered this before and knows how to combat this, with my truck a bad day is one without a breeze

Rotella has always made the exhaust smell different, some folks are just more sensitive to it than others, I'm sensitive to it. Castrol has a wierd odor also, but Rotella is unique. Maybe the combination of Rotella and a cat makes it even worse...

I always assumed it was exhaust, never thought about blow by.

this smell is from the front of the truck not the exhaust

The School District I used to work at used the Rotella. (ROSMELLA is what they called it, as every bus would have that smell after an oil change) and the engines in the buses were Cummins 5. 9L.

I use Caterpillar oil and have never had a smell issue. At the first oil change (5K) I used Rotella and it stunk!!!. . Then at 10K I started with the Caterpillar oil, no smell. Now with 30k on it, it has never smelled again.

Note: Caterpillar oil is CI-4 and is manufactured by Mobil

I've used Rotella synthetic for years and it does have a pronounced smell for at least the first 2,000 miles after each oil change. As you stated it's only in and around the engine compartment that the smell exists and not from the exhaust. The only time I smell it in the cab is when I have the defrost turned on or the windows down when idling. Usually after that point till it's changed again I don't really smell it unless I open the hood right away after shutting down when the engine is still hot.
